You take a can of tuna (in water) and drain it, and then add a tablespoon of light miracle whip and a cup of low fat cottage cheese. Mix it all together and wow.

Not to mention about 70g of protein here and 10g of fat.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Do you really need 70 g of protein in one meal?

No kidding 70g of protein. You are going to store it as fat at that rate.

Posted by: Uthinkso

ok lets all turn off the serious button boys and girls.

If I meant it I would have said something like, Hey Iandaniel I'm sick of your opinion stay out my thread you annoy me. I was just kidding around, cause he always bust my balls in my diet threads but its actually been helpful, so its all good.

One thing you can always count on from me is honesty, life is too short to beat around the bush. I say whats on my mind.

Jodi- I typically have 50g of protein per meal in order to hit my daily requirment. This I just stumbled onto and it tasted good so I dug it. Can 20g of protein make that big a difference. I still dig it, so I'll just cut out some of the protein or better yet split into two meals as a side or something.

Posted by: IainDaniel

I know you are playing around. But you need to realize the importance of the meals you prepare.

That was my only point.

Tuna + Cottage Cheese?

I love tuna, and I can tolerate cottage cheese...but together? You are a daring person!

Nobody needs more than 40g of protein per meal. Have you ever heard of gluconeogenesis? Basically it's the process of protein turning to glucose. If you are eating too much protein, you might as well be eating carbs because thats what happens to the extra protein.

I've actually gotten a lot better at calorie intake and incorporating veggies and fruits into my meal with a good protein source. I'm just slowly increasing my calorie intake. I don't want ot jump from 2000kcal to 300kcal in a weeks time.

The tale of the tape for my above mentioned snack is as follows:
397kcal
5g fat
8g carb
73g protein

completely unbalanced and such, but man its good. Perhaps saw this in half and bring in a cup of brocolli for the win.

In fact I haven't Jodi. I was under the idea that whatever your body didn't use protein wise it got rid of. Ok laugh I know I know.

I'm 240lb 6' BF north of 20%, what do you think my carb intake should be per meal. I eat six times.

I had been told to try and take in 1-1.2g of protein per pound of body weight. So for me thats 40g per meal at minimum.

Posted by: Witchblade

Hm, protein intake should be balanced on lean body mass at that bf I think.

I think 1.2 g per pound of lbm will do.

Your not the first to say this. Now I need to find out what my LBM is.

Posted by: Witchblade

Total weight x 0.8

Posted by: Uthinkso

If that is correct, I'm carrying around 48lbs of fat and 192lb of LBM at 240lb total body weight.

Posted by: Jodi

1G protein per pound of bodyweight. Anything else is a waste.

Ok so you are saying per pound of body weight not per pound of lean body mass? Just want to confirm here as I have been told both.

Ya know it almost merits a poll.

You said you're at 20% bodyfat, so the other 80% must be lean body mass.

Posted by: Uthinkso

north of 20% is my guess, I have calipers in route.

If you want to do per pound of LBM then it's 1.5G. I just do it simply by 1G per pound of bodyweight.

That works for me and probably easier to keep track of good idea jodi.

So is 30g of carbs and 10g of fat per meal a decent goal for weight loss, or would you change something with that.

Just to preface I have read ALL of the stickies.,

How many meals a day with 30G carbs?

Posted by: AKILLY

What kind of meal can you eat that has only 30G of carbs, beside a 4 .oz of chicken brest and a 12 oz of salad?

Salad is fibrous veggies. They don't really count.

4 oz. Chicken with 2/3 C. Mashed Sweet Potatoes = 30G P and 30G C.

Posted by: AKILLY

Jodi you need to make a cook book, you have great info when it comes to meals.

Hi Jodi,

I'm curious - what is the source of that number? Why 40g instead of 30g or 80g? Does it matter what kind of protein you are consuming? There's a pretty big difference between the usability of egg proteins and legumes, for example.

Thanks for any insight you can share,

For all six meals. From what I have gathered I should balance my meals on a cut, well anytime really, so my balance would be 40g protein, 30g carbs and 10g fat???

Which to be honest seems like no food what so ever.

It's not a number set it stone and it really depends on your body. It's just an average number. It's very unlikely that people can digest more than 40-50g of protein. If you use smaller amounts of protein you body becomes more efficient of using all that protien for repair and energy. Your body has to break those proteins down into amino acids and peptides first but the protein doesn't sit there waiting to be broken down. It gets digested and used for other things such as feeding bacteria and glucose production.

I think the slower digesting proteins will get broken down more than fast digesting proteins such as egg whites, fish and whey.

Legumes are an excellent source of protein. Add them in with some brown rice and you have a complete protein.

Yo don't want carbs in your 5th and 6th meal if you are trying to lose unless they revolve around your workout.

Posted by: Uthinkso

meal five is right after workout but the sixth meal is not. That makes perfect sense though. Your body is slowing down and burning less towards the end of the day. So why add carbs, that your body will store as glucose if they aren't burned.

Jodi, I really have to thank you for your patience with me. I deeply and truly want to understand this and do well with it, which explains my many questions.
