Lions deal Bly to Broncos for Bell, Foster

Allen Park, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Lions have traded cornerback Dre' Bly and a sixth-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft to the Denver Broncos in exchange for running back Tatum Bell, offensive tackle George Foster and a fifth-round pick in April's draft.

Bly, an eight-year veteran out of North Carolina, will likely fill the position vacated when Darrent Williams was shot and killed in downtown Denver on January 1.

The 29-year-old Bly, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, spent the past four years with Detroit after playing his first four NFL seasons with St. Louis. He has 31 career interceptions and was a member of the Rams' Super Bowl winning team after the 1999 season.

Bell, entering his fourth year out of Oklahoma State, rushed 233 times for 1,025 yards and two touchdowns last year while splitting time with Mike Bell. He had 921 yards and eight touchdowns in 2005, despite starting only one of the 15 games he played.

The 6-foot-5, 338-pound Foster has played each of his first four NFL seasons with the Broncos, who made him the 20th overall pick of the 2003 draft. He was Denver's starting right tackle for most of the past three seasons, starting 45 of the 49 games he has played.

Pat's released Cory Dillon today too. I read they re-signed Health Evans and Billy Yates.

Posted by: Dale Mabry

Letting Dillon go was the best thing for both parties. Although, Maroney will need to step it up big time.

He'll get a 100 more carries next year. If he can take the abuse, he should be alright.

Posted by: calalily1972

He got 199 last year. I don't know how I feel about his release. He still has a bit more in him but he wants the spotlight and he won't get that with the Pat's. Also, letting him go throws back a nice chunk of change towards the cap. Hopefully Maroney can pick it up. They really need younger LB's.

He meant Maroney would get 100 more carries, as in not a big deal.

I think Dillon is more interested in his place in history, and his numbers won't grow getting only half the carries.

Jake Plumber is making a good move wanting to retire. Being a starter the beginning of one year and getting traded for a 4 or 5th round draft pick would kill my ego.

I dont know about the Steelers cutting Porter, I guess costs to much for what their getting

Yeah, I agree. I've watched Plummer since his days at Arizona State. Great college QB, was one or two notches away from being a really, really good NFL QB. If I were him, I would cash in too while healthy.

Tracking the comings and goings in free agency
By Adam Schefter

(March 2, 2007) -- Free agency has opened with a flurry. Already, numerous teams are on the board. Take a glance at the deals, and the potential soon-to-be deals.

Friday, March 2
The Patriots are expected to sign free agent LB Adalius Thomas and TE Kyle Brady.

The Saints are scheduled to host free agents CB Ken Hamlin and LB Brian Simmons on Saturday.

The 49ers have signed CB Nate Clements to the biggest contract ever given to a defensive player -- eight years, $80 million, including $22 million guaranteed.

Browns have signed OT Eric Steinbach to seven-year contract worth $49.5 million with $17 million guaranteed.

Bills have agreed to terms with guard Derrick Dockery on seven-year deal worth $49 million with $18.5 million guaranteed.

(Note: Last year, Steve Hutchinson deal was worth $49 million for seven years with $16.5 guaranteed. Dockery (guard) matches that, and Steinbach (tackle) just beats it. Both Steinbach and Dockery got more guaranteed money than Hutchinson.)

Also, the Bills and OT Langston Walker have agreed to terms on five-year deal worth approximately $25 million.

Buccaneers have signed free-agent DE Patrick Chukwurah to five-year contract worth $5.5 million with $400,000 guaranteed.

The Falcons have signed FB Ovie Mughelli to a six-year contract worth $18 million, including $5 million guaranteed.

Giants officially sign C Shaun O'Hara.

Free-agent LB Napoleon Harris scheduled to visit the Buccaneers Friday and Chiefs Saturday.

Rams hosted visits with free agents LB Tully Banta-Cain and WR Drew Bennett.

Patriots hosted visits with free agents TE Kyle Brady and RB Sammy Morris.

49ers also played host to free-agents S Michael Lewis.

Browns hosted visit with DE Antwaan Peek.

Redskins hosted visit with free-agent LB London Fletcher. Redskins also scheduled to host visit with CB Fred Smoot today.

Broncos hosted visits with free agents TE Daniel Graham, RB Ahman Green and DE Patrick Kerney, and scheduled to welcome QB Brad Johnson on March 3.

Free-agent RB Dominic Rhodes is scheduled to visit the Giants Friday.

Free-agent G Kris Dielman is scheduled to visit the Seahawks Friday.

Free-agent FB Justin Griffith is scheduled to visit the Bucs Friday.

Free-agent WR Kevin Curtis is scheduled to visit the Vikings Friday and the Lions Saturday.

Free-agent QB Jeff Garcia is scheduled to visit the Raiders Friday.

Free-agent DE Dewayne White scheduled to visit the Lions Friday.

The Jaguars have signed RT Tony Pashos and K Josh Scobee, each to five-year deals. Pashos' deal is for $24 million, including a $9 million signing bonus.

Other news
Quarterback Jake Plummer is expected to retire. The Broncos and Buccaneers had agreed to terms on a trade to send Plummer to Tampa Bay in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, but the trade would be nullified by Plummer's decision to retire.

Dolphins have released DE Kevin Carter and G Jeno James, the team announced. (Dolphins have yet to release Joey Harrington. His roster bonus is not due until next week, so they have some time.)

The Patriots have released RB Corey Dillon and re-signed RB Heath Evans.

Jets have released QB Patrick Ramsey.

The Lions released TE Marcus Pollard, DT Marcus Bell and DT Tyoka Jackson; The Lions also traded DE James Hall to St. Louis for their second 2007 fifth-round draft choice. Detroit's trade of Dre' Bly to Denver became official.

The Falcons released LB Edgerton Hartwell and LB Ike Reese.

Vikings have released S Tank Williams.

Redskins, Fletcher agree to five-year deal

ASHBURN, Va. (March 2, 2007) -- Linebacker London Fletcher agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract with the Washington Redskins, capping another busy day of free agency for one of the NFL's top-spending teams.

The agreement, which includes a $10.5 million signing bonus, came as Fletcher and cornerback Fred Smoot were treated to a Washington Wizards game, part of a courtship by a Redskins team that went 5-11 and needs to repair the worst defense in the NFC.

Fletcher fills a need at middle linebacker, where Lemar Marshall regressed last year in his second season since Antonio Pierce's departure. Fletcher is small for the position -- 5-foot-10 and 245 pounds -- and will turn 32 in May, but he has been reliably solid over nine NFL seasons with Buffalo and the St. Louis Rams. He's yet to miss a game in his NFL career and has started every game since 2001.

The Redskins were also in serious negotiations with Smoot, who played four seasons with the Redskins before leaving in 2005 to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

"Everything would be put back in place if I did (return)," said Smoot, who had two difficult seasons in Minnesota. "Me leaving here was a big mistake."

In addition, cornerback Travis Fisher was scheduled to visit on Saturday, and the team was also courting offensive lineman Leonard Davis.

"We're just working as hard as we can. You never know," coach Joe Gibbs said as he left with the entourage heading to the NBA game in stretch limousines. "It's probably a little more up in the air than it normally is. Normally, the first day, we would have already knocked a bunch of stuff out. We haven't got a lot done, so I don't know."

Meanwhile, the Redskins took care of three of their own players. They re-signed safety Vernon Fox, keeping him off the free-agent market, and gave multiyear contract extensions to guard Randy Thomas and fullback Mike Sellers.

Fletcher and Smoot both took physicals after arriving at Redskins Park. Then they headed to the Verizon Center to see the Wizards play the Atlanta Hawks.

The Redskins were successful with a similar ploy last year. They took Antwaan Randle El, Andre Carter, Adam Archuleta and Todd Collins to a Wizards game -- and all ended up signing.

Although the Redskins were aggressive on Day One again this year, their tally of signings isn't expected to make the kind of splash made in past seasons. Gibbs said the team would be limited and more meticulous in its approach, especially after last year's disappointing performances from big-money signings Brandon Lloyd and Archuleta.

The greater degree of caution was reflected in the first two players brought in the building, both of whom have a history with Redskins coaches. Fletcher played for assistant coach Gregg Williams when Williams was head coach of the Bills, and Smoot was a second-round Redskins draft pick in 2001.

"One thing about it: We know Smooter," Gibbs said. "And he knows us."

Cornerback is a priority because Shawn Springs is uncertain to return because of his large salary cap number. The other starter, Carlos Rogers, had a lackluster season in 2006.

The top cornerback available was Buffalo free agent Nate Clements, but he was expected to command a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $20 million. The San Francisco 49ers were considered the early front-runners for Clements.

Smoot isn't a shutdown cornerback, but he's more affordable and played well when he was in Washington. He was cut Thursday by the Vikings after two seasons marred by injuries, violations of team rules and a disorderly conduct charge for his action at the infamous boat party in October 2005. He had only three interceptions in two seasons with Minnesota, hardly making him worth his six-year, $34 million contract.

Also on the Redskins' radar was Davis, who could be a replacement for guard Derrick Dockery. Dockery became a free agent after the Redskins were unable to sign him to a new deal, and he signed a seven-year, $49 million deal with Buffalo.

Davis was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2001 draft by Arizona, but he never became the overpowering All-Pro player the Cardinals envisioned. He played guard for three NFL seasons, then switched to left tackle in 2004.

Eagles re-sign DE Thomas to five-year deal

PHILADELPHIA (March 2, 2007) -- Free-agent defensive end Juqua Thomas re-signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on the first day of free agency.

Thomas' playing time increased last year when three-time Pro Bowl peformer Jevon Kearse suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2. He responded by posting career highs of 47 tackles and six sacks.

Thomas originally signed with Tennessee as a rookie free agent out of Oklahoma State. He played four seasons with the Titans before signing with the Eagles during training camp in 2005.

For his career, Thomas has recorded 128 tackles and 11 sacks in 73 games.

Pats signed Adalius Thomas & 9ers get Clements

49ers make Clements NFL's highest-paid defender ever
By Len Pasquarelli

It took a monster deal to lure cornerback Nate Clements to Monster Park, but on the opening day of the NFL free agent period, the San Francisco 49ers delivered, agreeing with the most coveted player in the market on a landmark contract.

The 49ers rewarded Clements, the top player in the ESPN.com ratings of the league's unrestricted free agents, with an eight-year, $80 million contract that includes $22 million in guarantees.

I'm thinking they need to pick up a pash rusher and big receiver with the first 2 picks. If Moss or Bowe are left when they pick, they should grab either or.

Agent: Bly not unhappy -- publicly
Posted by Bill Emkow March 08, 2007 07:47AM

Two days after the Washington Post reported that Dre Bly was miffed at being traded to the Broncos, his agent comes out to say that isn't true. At least publicly.

March 7, Denver Post: "I have had nothing but positive dialogue with Mike Shanahan and Ted Sundquist about Dre. Dre understands that it is a compliment to be wanted. Neither Dre nor myself have said publicly that he is disenchanted. I understand why certain teams only allow the head coach to speak publicly. If Dre is so miserable or unhappy it hasn't been publicly said by Dre or myself. "

Adam Schefter reports on NFL Network that the Broncos have engaged the Redskins and Saints in trade talks for Bly. The Redskins are offering Shawn Springs and the Saints are offering a fourth-round draft pick.

Sounds like the Broncos inherited a real headache.

RB McGahee goes to Ravens for 3 draft picks
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
March 9, 2007

Willis McGahee is in place as Jamal Lewis' replacement in Baltimore. The day after Lewis signed with the Cleveland Browns, the Ravens obtained McGahee from Buffalo for three draft picks - a third and a seventh in this year's draft and a third in 2008. McGahee is coming off a season in which he finished with a career-low 990 yards rushing but led the Bills with six touchdowns rushing in 14 starts. In 2005, he rushed for 1,247 yards and five touchdowns in 15 starts.

The Broncos have agreed to a two-year contract with veteran backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey, 28, according to a published report. The Denver Post quoted Ramsey's agent, Jimmy Sexton, as saying Ramsey agreed to a deal worth between $4 million and $5 million. He threw one pass last season in his only year with the Jets ... The Falcons reached agreement with wide receiver Joe Horn ... The Dolphins signed former Giants kicker Jay Feely and former Bears safety Cameron Worrell and re-signed 350-pound defensive tackle Keith Traylor. Feely, 29, signed as an unrestricted free agent after two seasons with the Giants. In six seasons in the NFL, the first four with Atlanta, Feely has converted 156 of 196 field-goal attempts ... The Seahawks released defensive end Grant Wistrom ... The Rams signed tight end Randy McMichael, who was released last week by Miami.

March 20, 2007
By Clark Judge
CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer

Attention, NFL shoppers: I just found a running back you might not be able to afford.

Say hello to San Diego's Michael Turner. He's a restricted free agent. He's tendered with a one-year offer. And he's available ... for the right price.

Which is where we, er, you, have a problem.

You see, to acquire Turner it will cost first- and third-round draft picks, compensation that all but killed interest in one of the league's promising talents. I hedge here because there's still time, with April 20 the deadline for signing restricted free agents to offer sheets.

The probability, of course, is that no one will jump for Turner. He's strictly a backup, playing only when LaDainian Tomlinson sits down, and has 157 carries in three NFL seasons, with 80 attempts in 2006 a career high. He also returns kicks.

So why, clubs ask themselves, spend two draft picks on him?

Well, the guy is good. Real good. When I asked one NFL general manager about Turner, he went on and on about his speed, quickness, power and vision. What he didn't mention is that Turner -- nicknamed "The Burner" -- has a career average of 6.0 yards per carry, improves his numbers each season and ended the Colts' unbeaten run in 2005 with a game-clinching 83-yard touchdown.

"He has all the intangibles you look for in a running back," the GM said.

What he doesn't have, of course, is much of a chance. Not with L.T. ahead of him. Turner plays only when Tomlinson needs a breather or when the Chargers are so far ahead they can sit the league's MVP.

But that's one reason Turner is intriguing. He hasn't absorbed the hits of, say, Jamal Lewis. He has far more upside than Ahman Green. And, frankly, he's a better, more powerful runner than Dominic Rhodes. Yet all of those backs signed free-agent contracts worth megabucks, while Turner sat home waiting for offseason workouts to begin.

That doesn't mean he won't cash in. In gaining the highest tender, Turner picks up $2.35 million for one year's service as Tomlinson's caddy. Then, when he becomes a free agent a year from now, he is auctioned to the highest bidder -- and, trust me, there will be no shortage of suitors ready to empty their vaults.

So if you're an NFL shopper, why not beat the rush? Why not take a chance on the guy now, figuring you can't do better in the draft than you can with Turner?

Well, some clubs have. They contacted the Chargers to see if they're willing to deal Turner at a reduced cost, but they might as well have been looking for snow in Mission Bay. It's just not going to happen. Sure, Turner is available ... for a one and a three. Period. End of discussion.

Still, teams call.

"Let's just say there has been a lot of activity," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said of the number of inquiries.

Smith isn't interested in negotiating. He has something of value, and he intends to hold it as long as he can. That means one more season. He knows Turner probably will exit as a free agent after 2007, but, as he said, "that's what happens when you have good football teams. Guys go to the market."

But 2008 is not Smith's concern. This season is, and he intends to protect his club in critical areas. He did it a year ago, with Shaun Phillips behind Steve Foley at linebacker. I think we all know what happened there. And Smith did it in 2005, too, keeping Drew Brees and Philip Rivers when the GM's critics predicted he would jettison one.

Smith wants Michael Turner around as an insurance policy against an injury to Tomlinson. In six seasons L.T. missed exactly one game, so the odds of something happening there aren't what you'd call high. Yet, Smith isn't about to risk losing Turner -- unless, of course, someone is willing to meet the Chargers' demand.

"I believe in depth," Smith said.

That's why he stuck the highest possible tender on Michael Turner. It would have been less expensive for the Chargers if Smith reduced the cost to a first-rounder alone, but then he would have invited interest.

Look what happened with Laveranues Coles in 2003. When the Jets made the mistake of tendering the wide receiver with a first-round draft choice as compensation, Washington jumped in with an offer sheet the Jets did not match.

Afterward, Redskins officials acknowledged they wouldn't have acted had the Jets upped the price to a first- and third-rounder.

That explains what's going on with Michael Turner -- or, more accurately, what is not going on. When the New York Jets needed a starter at running back, they didn't think about signing Turner to an offer sheet; they traded for Thomas Jones. It cost them a second-round draft pick for a former first-rounder who rushed for a combined 2,545 yards the past two seasons.

Turner is far more expensive, which is why nobody has budged. And why, in all likelihood, nobody will.

Michael Turner is the best back out there, but he's a rarity in The Year of Spending Freely: He's a back no one can afford.
