How strong of a core?

(CLICK HERE here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Can u measure of how strong core is by how many situps you can do? In one sitting I can do 120. I guess this is moderate I think?

I know when I started I could do like 10-20.. Good improvement I guess.

Posted by: P-funk

i don't count situps for measuring core strength.

try doing a plank hold.

Posted by: Mystik

2 min maybe thats damn hard lol

Posted by: P-funk

it shouldn't be.

Dragonflags.

If you can do 10 with good form you're the fucking man.

I can hold a plank for around 7 minutes and that is total killer! 10 Minutes would be pretty awesome!

Posted by: gr81

sit ups are irrelevant

How do you do those?

Posted by: camarosuper6

Fuck all that.

Do 600lb deadlifts and 400 plus pounds squats for reps.

Thatll be a nice measure of your core.

I love planks. DD if you can do them for 7 min you should try them with a plate on your back- I do that sometimes. Good times. lol

For sure squatting and deadlifting with heavy weight is great too!
Snatches, cleans and front squats are great as well.

What are planks?

Posted by: Richie1888

this might sound daft but what is meant by the term core strength and how do you go about improving it ?

imagine doing a pushup, resting on your forearms in the up position, hold as long as you can.

Id say 2min is good.

After I got to a minute, I started extending arms and/or legs.

Posted by: danny81

should you add weight to planks? if so after how many mins?

I normally put my 2 daughters on my back, but the most I get is about 60 secs because they always jump off.

^ Planks

Posted by: Double D

You like that do ya BB? My daughters are so active, they just cant sit still!

Posted by: jamtheman_m

when i do planks, it doesnt so much hurt my core as my shoulders/arms...maybe my arms in the wrong place

I can do a plank for 8 minutes. There are other core strength activities also. Get an exercise ball and get in the situp position, then start coming up but stop when you are flat across - your body holding a 90 degree angle at your knees. Try and hold that as long as you can. Make sure you're squeezing your abs not just holding it with your hip flexors.

There are quite a few but that's one of my favorites.

I am not sure what you mean with the situps.. If my knees are bent and I am on the floor, I am already at 90 degrees. Exercise ball? You mean stability ball? With my knees bent on a stability ball, I am sitting upright on the ball. If my legs are on the ball, then once again, I am laying flat.

And 8 minutes planks are crazy.

Isn't a plank just one postion and holding it? Why do you guys say "planks"? Shouldn't you say, I can do a plank for 2 mins. Not I do "planks" for 2 mins. Am I right that it is just holding yourself up in that position above? I'm confusing myself and probably you.

Maybe you do more than 1 set of a 2 min plank.

Kind of like doing a bicep curl. If you do 4 reps, you did curls.

I don't think I've ever done one plank...

That is what I thought. It would take a long time to do sets of 8 min planks.

Depends who you ask. I would define it as the ability to prevent unwanted movement and the lumbo-pelvic hip complex. Endurance of the core musculature is also important.

Agreed. I also wonder why one would if only for bragging rights. Once Id get to a 2 minute mark, Id move on to harder isometrics.

Or add weight to your planks. Or is that what you meant?

Posted by: AKIRA

Yeah anything. Even extending an appendige (sp?)

Haha dude when I was typing it I was thinking "no one's going to get what I mean" I'll go dig up a picture or something it's so simple yet so hard to explain without images I guess.

Anyway yeah I would say the primary focus of core strength is for stability in preventing unwanted movement around the pelvic area and lower abdomen that comprimises your stability. It can also help you run better by allowing you to have better form.
