dull chest pain (left side)

Ok well maybe for the past 5-7 days I've felt a very slight and dull chest "pain" on the upper left side of my chest. It's kind of hard to pinpoint an exact location, but maybe directly beneath or slightly above my left nipple (i'm a male).

at first I thought it was gas, or perhaps my back needed to be cracked, but now its been a few days so I'm a bit worried. I feel like I need to crack my back or something to relieve it, but it doesnt do anything.

Deep breaths don't make it better or worse. Increasing my heart rate doesn't seem to affect it either. It's just a persistent, dull, throbbing like sensation. I feel it once every 30 to 60 seconds, sometimes I don't feel it for a few minutes. Then its just like one slight "throb" that is quite dull. Sometimes it feels like there are 2 or 3 in a row, then nothing.

I'm really worried it has something to do with my heart. I have not yet been to a doctor because I am currently studying abroad (In Holland) from the US, and I know seeing a doctor would be very very expensive.

At the end of last summer I had a complete heart check (ekg?) where they put on the crazy gel things and run these tests. They also check it out with the xray machine and goo stick, or whatever. They found no problems and said I didn't need to be seen in another 10 years.

Soo I have no idea what to think. I drink a LOT of coffee and thought perhaps I would stop drinking it for a week to see if I noticed any differences.

Do you think this is stomach related? Or does it sound cardiac related?

Thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

It could be heart palpitations, although palpitations don't "hurt."

It could be a stomach ulcer.

No one on the forum will be able to diagnose it though.

It wouldn't be that. GERD=Chronic heartburn.

Go see a doctor, it could be any number of things you need a physical assessment by a professional, not a bunch of bodybuilders on the internet.

if you have health insurance it works in other countries

thanks for the replies.

I went to the hospital. After an ECG, Chest X-Rays, and 4 tubes of blood- the pain was ruled out as being cardiac related.

He gave me two anti acid pills to try and see if I experience any relief for the possibility of it being a stomach issue. I took one and didn't notice too much. The pain today does however feel more prevalent and a bit sharper as it has in the past.

Glad they didn't find anything major with my heart, sad they ran 3 unnecessary tests I will get a crazy bill for

Any advice on diet changes or OTC stomach acid medications?

I'm only 22, have drank coffee for years and eaten all sorts of things. I've never ever had an issue with stomach acid / heart burn / indigestion. What's going on

I haven't had coffee in like 3 days. I would HATE to have to give it up.. I love love coffee.

Might be muscular Very difficult to tell over the internet.

Zantac is an OTC antacid, not sure of the generic name but you can look it up on rxlist.com

Good luck dude, keep us posted with your progress.

Definitely start using a good probiotic (Trouble pimped Garden of Life if you can afford it).

Digestive enzymes for the next while might help as well with GERD issues. NOW super enzymes are pretty good. Try that out for a couple of weeks.

Back off on the coffee as well. Sl-oooowly start weening yourself off of it. Or at least get back down to a cup or 2 max/day.

Anemia via low iron intake can also cause chest pains, they had no ideas for you?

Posted by: emitecaps

it probably is acid reflux. I had the exact same conidtions as you and they ran a battery of tests and found nothing conclusive. Check for ulcers and found it might be acid reflux. Started on tagamet or Zantec and some OTC antiacids and it's pretty much gone. Come son every once in a while especially if I lie down after a meal.

ah thanks for all the suggestions and comments.

no they had no ideas. just that it is nothing "serious" since they ruled out a heart problem. he actually said "it's just something we'll have to accept" or something.

my mom has to take Iron supplements (or did) due to anemia, but I had blood tests this past summer and checked out fine. I eat chicken and lots o spinach.

If symptoms continue maybe I'll try an OTC antacid. Thanks!

Glad to hear nothing serious, take care.

I had something like that a few months ago and Lexus (also on this board) is also having the same problems with his chest- you should PM him. I was diagnosed as having this:Costochondritis I'm not saying this is what you have but it is something to look into. Good luck.

I had the same thing, went like that for a long time everyone kept telling me it was gerds and I said it cannot be. Well tried some protonix and it was gone in two days.

I can probably help, I have the exact same symptoms you have described, and I drink more than 1 cup of coffee a day. The good news is i live in Canada and pay nothing for medical.

I am only 25 years old, when I went to the doctor I was 23, he said there is no way that this could be your heart, he proceeded with an EKG, and said definately not my heart. He gave me a sample of pills called Pariet (rabeprazole sodium tablets) = For the treatment of conditions requiring the reduction of gastric acid secretion and Helicobacter pylori eradication. I tried these and they worked!

He concluded that it is the acid in my stomach, and asked if I ever have heart burn, or regurgitate a little in the mouth at times.

He then sent me to a stomach specialist for a biopsy, to make sure I didn't have any ulcers secreting acid.

She said do not drink coffee, do not drink orange juice, apple juice or any juices...especially in the morning. The biopsy was fine (except I was awake for it, nothing like watching the inside of your stomach on t.v. while gagging on a tube).

The conclusion, keep taking the pills when needed, try to cut out the coffee and the acidy foods/juices.

Usually if I take 1 pariet pill (10mg) my pain is gone for a week. Can't complain.

P.S. I still drink coffee.
