It might be a stupid Question, but can Metabolism change or slow down???

If you used to have a fast Metabolism as Teenager, could it slow down in your twentys or thirties due to aging???

yes.

Activity levels and diet also impact metabolism.

For sure!! There are many variables that affect metabolism and age is certainly one of them along with hormones, diet, activity, weather, size of the person, stress etc.

Generally as we age, the slower our metabolism is.

absolutely... but the good news is that you can speed it back up again

Yes it's a well known fact that your muscle doesn't replenish itself as well as you get older and no matter what your metabolism is going to slow down. Exercise and eating right can keep you just as healthy if not healthier than the majority of younger people though.

Regardless of Age, or does it have its limitations???

Once you hit 36 you're doomed to a slow metabolism for the rest of your life.

You might want to get a gun.

When you're young you have a high metabolism which allows you to be stupid and eat pretty much anything... as you age, your metabolism slows but, you have more experience and hopefully more wisdom to counter balance that... meaning... you train more efficently, you eat better, etc... and done properly many people in their "old" age are in fact healthier and in better shape than many in their youth.

also, diseases to do with the thyroid will lower or raise your hormone levels and either elevate or slow your metabolism.

i have hypothyroidism and without my medication, i'm even too exhausted to get out of bed.

one reason that metabolism slows as you age is you lose a significant amount of muscle which is burning a lot of calories on a daily basis.

what is considered "young" now? Late teens? Mid twenties?

more specifically, for how long can kids/youngsters get away with eating "pretty much anything" and at what point/age do they need to start paying closer attention to their diet?

*edit* the above question relates only to metabolism and not health issues as it's obviously a good idea to always be concerned with diet- but please omit that fact for this question

I think the turning point is when the body starts producing less test, growth, and other important hormones... that beginning of that decline is different for everyone on an individual basis however thought thought is that we "peak" in our early 20's.

That being said, if someone in their teens really want exceptional results in the shortest time... then dial in diet and training now while their young and the foundation they build will help them their entire life... not to mention how awesome they'll be now!
