What is your opinion about Dips as an Exercise???

Posted by: BulkMeUp

I love them and do them weighted. Wide grip is much tougher than Narrow grip.

Posted by: vortrit

Dips kick ass.

Posted by: BoneCrusher

Breakfast food of champions. Weighted dips are even better.

Posted by: fufu

I think they are fine, I don't do them because they bother my shoulder.

Posted by: NordicNacho

compound exercise you got to love them

Posted by: DiGiTaL

I cant do more then 4 :'( (without weights)

Posted by: Plateau_Max

Vince Gironda hated weighted dips, he thought they were begging for injury and one time pulled a guy's pants down while he was donig them in his gym.

HAHAHAHA

Posted by: 33sun33

I love dips (weighted)! Unfortunately, my shoulder joint got messed up doing the bench press, and dips seem to aggravate the problem. So I dont do them anymore

Posted by: P-funk

i think they can place the shoulder in a compromised position. I don't do them.

Posted by: Yanick

I used to love doing dips but after hurting my shoulder I haven't done them in months. Don't think i'll ever be doing them again, they aggravate my shoulder injury terribly.

Posted by: Double D

If you feel no pain, then do em. They are one of my main lifts. But I like to add plates and more plates!

Posted by: slip

I avoid them, same reason as PFunk.

Posted by: KelJu

I love them. They are my favorite upperbody/arm exercise. I can't remember who said it, but they said that dips are the squats of the upperbody.

Posted by: Gazhole

Dips are great. One of my favourites.

Posted by: danzik17

I love doing them but I control the intensity through RI and rep timings. I'll never hang weights on myself for it though.

Posted by: fohawkenator

dips are awesome some times instead of doing alot of different exersizes for 3 sets ill do 6 sets of dips for triceps sometimes i get a better pump sumtimes not

Posted by: Witchblade

I swear if I hear the word pump again on IM these days I'm going to kill myself.

Posted by: Nate K

I love a good arm pump. DONT Kill Yourself!

Posted by: Gordo

I think weighted dips (going too deep) is partly what has landed me in rehab for my shoulder. For me (only) they're out of the lineup, forever.

Posted by: JonnyStead

I've never done them! probably because I dont have the equipment but I've heard the horror stories so I'm happy to stay away from them

Posted by: snoogans

I like them but since I hurt my shoulder, I use less weight and concentrate on
form. 8 seconds down, no pause, 8 seconds up.

Posted by: TheCurse

dips are the shizz.

I know what you mean.

I think if we team up we could take THEM out instead, though.

How does one not have the equipment to dip? I could dip using my toilet and my foot stool.

Posted by: Plateau_Max

A toilet and foot stool? Are you 2 feet tall??

Posted by: AKIRA

He just doesnt have legs.

I like dips. I can do some crazy weight too. However, if I ever had a problem with my shoulders from doing them, I wouldnt be so sad to say goodbye to them. Its not like giving up bench pressing or.... squats.

Nazo: Oh, yes. They make terrific pair. They went together like lamb and tuna fish.
Tommy: Lamb and tuna fish?
Nazo: Maybe you like spaghetti and meatball? You more comfortable with that analogy?
Homeless Guy: Yes, considering we're in America. I mean, if you don't like spaghetti and meatballs, why don't you get the hell out?

pump pump pump pump pump!!!!

you got a problem with getting pumped?.... it may be temporary but it feels good and lets you know you are working hard!

Posted by: Casey_Butt

I think that, properly done, V-bar dips are one of the best chest exercises in existence ...a lost "secret" of productive training -- parallel bar dips can't come close for chest stimulation. As far as triceps are concerned though, V-bar Dips won't really cut it.

Posted by: Leatherface

Dips are amazing for upper body growth and always seemed to benefit my pecs a great deal if I leaned into them. However, they can bother the shoulder and I have a torn labrum on my left and bursitus on my right so unfortunately I cannot dip anymore.

The 8 seconds down is fine, but why the hell would you want to train your body that it is ok to lift your weight that slowly? Explosive on the way up, slow and controlled on the way down imo.

Feels good, yes. Lets you know you are working hard, no. Pump is just what it is..pump. It is meaningless. It doesn't tell you anything other than lots of blood has filled up an area and is making the skin tight. You can work hard and never see pump. You can workout terribly in a fashion that will never produce gains and get lots of pump.

I think the pump has some value - not in building muscle as such, but in stretching the connective tissues around the muscle (perimysium, endomysium, epimysium, etc). ...and if you have difficulty getting a muscle to pump it almost certainly means that you're not recruiting it properly (assuming you're eating right, using the appropriate rep range, etc).
