Theory of Metabolism

I think we all have a good 'feel' for what metabolism is but I was wandering if anyone knows if metabolism can be quantified.

For example, is there a number that one can somehow obtain in the same way we associate a number with body fat or weight.

Pretty random...first think I thought about this morning for some reason.

Calories burned per time interval.

Basal metabolism is calories burned per time interval in a rested state.

Hmmm....thanks, that makes sense. Is there any way we can measure this easily?

Posted by: kicka19

yup, they hook you up and measure your resting metabolic rate

Posted by: robousy

wow, these are some quick responses!

Ok, so the idea I'm getting is that its not too hard to measure ...but you need some pro equipment. You couldn't drop by your local exercise shop and pick up a 'metabolic measurer'.

Thanks guys!

where do you go to test your metabolism?

By measuring O2 breathed in, CO2 breathed out and pulse rate at different levels of exercise intensity, it's possible to correlate pulse rate with no. of calories burned/min, grams of carbs burned/min and grams of fat burned/min. VO2max and lactate threshold can also be established. This equipment costs $000s.

we test VO2max at our facility using the Jaeger equipment and the monarch bike....those are the two pieces of equipment used in pretty much all of the research tests.

We charge $100 for it.

you get VO2max (or VO2peak since most people wont reach their VO2max due to muscular fatigue) as well as percentage of fats/carbs/protein burned at various work rates, lactate threshold, RMR, and calories expended at different work rates. We print it all out on a graph and intrepret the results for the person.

I want to do that........do you do the testing P?

Usually it is myself and Dr. Branson (the owner). He runs all the equipment because it is his and I have not gone to the training class to learn how to use it yet. He is teaching me how to hook people up on it and do the diagnostic tests and stuff like that. It is a lot of computer stuff.

I typically just watch the results screen as the person is pedalling on the bike and make notes and then interpret the results after they are done and talk to them about training and how to use the information to their best ability. I give them all the info about what they just did and tell them how their body works at different work rates.

Do you guys do it on Saturdays at all?

Posted by: P-funk

sometimes. if you make an appointment.

Posted by: calalily1972

Cool! Can you email me the info for an apt?

Posted by: P-funk

just tell me when you are thinking about coming in and I will ask Mike if he can do it on that particular saturday.

I don't think you want to do it right now though, coming back and just trying to get into exercise again. Testing your VO2max (or VO2peak) is very strenuos and it pushes you to your absolute limit (some puke). It is really tought to get someone there, so it may not be the best for you right now.

Ok, maybe in a month or so?

sounds good.

to bad you live so far from the facility. with a gym membership of only $30/month to train at the private facility, you can't beat it. good equipment and no one there to bother you.

Yeah, that would be cool but I'm not moving anytime soon.

I only pay $20.00 per month for World.

VO2max is an awesome test. That's when I first realized the range differences in resting and target heart rates.

There are some people who look specifically to double their heart rates but see for me that would only be in the high 70s low 80s as far as BPM goes. I can push it to just right about 200 if I'm going nuts on it which is around 500% of my resting heart rate.

I would have to say a good way to compare metabolism from one person to another or from past to present is to find your resting metabolic rate in calories, and divide that by each pound of body weight. So let's say you're a bit flabby and don't exercise much, you weight 160lbs, you get your RMR checked and it registers 1,400. Then you work out, gain some muscle, lose some fat, lower your resting heart rate, etc. You come back and you're 157lbs but look much better, and when you get it checked your RMR is 1,750.

-Before you started working out you were burning roughly 8.75 cals per pound of body weight... then a couple months later you have only lost 3 pounds or so but you're burning over 11 cals per pound of body weight. That's a straight up increase in your metabolism right there.
