Motivation....

Alright people, I'll probably come across as a whiner discussing this but I am totally lacking in motivation to train for the first time in 7 years. I find it a chore to head into the gym and I haven't been there for over a week. I know that scheduled breaks are fantastic for growth but this break is completely "un-scheduled".

What are you guys doing to keep yourself there? I'm thinking of going to see some shows to get me fired up but I'll welcome any other advice.

I've had the same issue, but I have many many hobbies for better or worse.

I remember the days of "ahh its late, I'll go tomorow".

I think what motivated me sometimes was just pure guilt, looking at yourself after downing a half gallon of ice cream (mint chip, cookie dough, to name a few ), or letting yourself rip through a 12 pack of MGD or whatever. The guilt trip would get me back in there sometimes, by letting myself get sloppy over a weekend.

Maybe a change in your routine?

you might need some new goals. Like I recently made a bet with a few friebnds to see who could make the biggest body change over a two month period. I might not win, but I am gouijng to work my ass off at it!!! also, like mudge said, you need to look at how much the benifits of lifting will outweight the costs of not. Me petrsonally, I am a fighter, and so the stronger I am the more I dont get my ass kicked, it is that simple...That alone motivates me to get in there

I think the most important motivator is a workout partner. I have two and even if one isn't in the right workout mood one day the other is.

I started bringing my younger brother with me as a workout partner, that helped me feel as if I had a responsibility to go...

Wanting to look good and be strong is enough to motivate me, also learning more about the physiology of muscles, and techniques, diet and such provide some motivation for me. Although I'm still very young and inexperienced, and I suppose the motivation factor wears on you after a while, but it could also be the very opposite and you may end up with increased motivation as you learn more and obtain goals.

I agree with all of this. Perhaps I need to get a workout partner. I've been training solo for the past 4 months and it sucks.

I can definitely relate to this, as I've had a few burnouts from time to time over the past 13 years. Probably the one thing that's helped the most in the past is simply changing gyms. I've done this several times. Some people are the type to get in a comfort zone and never want to leave the one place they've been working out, but personally, it's refreshing to me to have a change of scenery (and that includes all the scenery ). That along with perhaps getting excited about a new routine or new supplement program always helps. Of course, as I say this, sometimes the bottom line is you just need to get away. Get some time to rejuvenate and re-energize. Best of luck....

I found a new motivation when I started thinking about competing...knowing that you're going to be standing on a stage in front of however many people all judging your body makes you work pretty damn hard. It also gives you focus on what you need to improve and a lot of education towards what you do right and what you do wrong. Even if you get blown off of the stage (like I did) at least you learn and get motivated for next time.
