Personally
2 hours before training= whole food meal
up to one hour before training (closer to training the better)= whey in water
during training= sports drink (lucozade etc) or water

Can I ask why you want to eat during a workout? Why not just wait until you are done? anyway, BCAAs during the latter half of your workout.

to hopefully promote recovery and help raise energy levels if it can be done

Carbohydrates and protein in liquid form is ideal I think. I use skim milk, dextrose, and whey. Then I throw down a banana after I finish the workout.

ok cheers guys thanks very much

bcaas are expensive, but they do work. Use them midway during the end of your workout. I really dont recommend eating solid food during a workout.

Make sure you take some carbs in too, immediately after your workout. You need to spike your insulin to shuttle the proteins into your muscles for recovery. I use CytoGainer shake immediately after a workout (600cal; 79g complex carbs, 54g protein...), then eat a real meal about an hour or hour-and-a-half later. I hear that oats (surprisingly) are good for a PWO snack to accompany a whey shake too. They'll spike insulin, especailly with some berries added in. You can thank IanDaniel for that tip. I acted like a smartass when he recommended oats to spike insulin. I had no idea. Oops! Still though, I don't think it's very convenient to be chowing down on a bowl of oats in the changing rooms. My CytoGainer shake is quick-hitting and slides down just fine (The vanilla is yummy, if a little sweet!).

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to get some.

I'm always a smart ass to Iain, and you guys need to quit spelling his name wrong

Anyway, branch chain amino acids is the name of the physical manifestation of protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is when all essential amino acids attach to RNA to form a chain, all in different combinations. These chains are the proteins. So really, you supply the amino acids, you fuel protein synthesis. You fuel protein synthesis, your body can repair the muscles.

Oats is a good source of healthy slower burning carbohydrates that will help the digestion of the whey, berries and fruit are another good source.

Also I would recommend you're taking a good source of EFAs. Essence from IML is a good buy for that. If you're making all this in a post workout shake, toss in a scoop of natural PB.
