Is whey protein manditory as a part of an anabolic diet?

Posted by: soxmuscle

No, it's just an easy, quick way to get your protein intake up to where it should/needs to be.

Whey is a supplement its only to be used if you cant afford/cant stomach eating 6 clean meals a day I dont think many people can afford to eat enough chicken, steak, tuna, eggs.

But saying that it is quick and easy to consume post workout when you need a fastly absorbed protein within an hour of training to replenish glycogen stores.

So am I better off eating clean 6 meals a day, which I can do.

Yes but you need a fast digesting protein like whey, post workout.

Need is a strong word. The research suggests that, in particular, leucine + carb post workout is very beneficial.

Don't neglect pre-workout nutrition. If nothing else, can help prevent the drastic blood sugar drops during hard exercise (especially for morning exercisers) and ward off those pukey feelings.

What foods can a good amount of leucine be found in? And by carbs simple wheat bread is fine, right?

Well if you read Laynes article, he's suggesting supplemental leucine. However if you go here: NutritionData.com

And search based on Leucine rich foods.... surprise surprise, egg-whites are a kick-ass protein and AA source.

Don't forget, Layne has built a pretty muscular solid base already so things that give him a competitive edge, matter now.

I like Dan John's e-book.... in there he talks briefly about nutrition and sums up nutrition where performance is the concern beautifully:

Finally, real supplements. I choose a few for my athletes, but I only discuss them long after they swear off soft drinks, candy and all the rest and only after they convince me that they always have two full meals and a snack before an afternoon training session.
I like three: fish oil capsules, a magnesium tablet, and a potassium tablet. So, you may ask, when do we start the real stuff? Like what? Creatine? Don’t waste a nickel on any supplements until you exhaust the basic steps noted above…cut out the crap, eliminate troublesome foods, and eat the “Superfoods.” You may never need anything else!

Right, leucine is another word for dietary protein and eggs are good with dietary proteins. And the protein in egg whites digest a little slower than whey but much faster than casein. Thanks

But what about the carbs for the post workout, is wheat bread alright?

If so, a good post workout meal sounds like a breakfast sandwich or fried egg with wheat bread and butter.

Totally depends on the ingredients, whether you believe in the insulin spiking pwo and whether jupiter is in alignment with mercury.

Personally, PWO I like milk, oats, sometimes rice cakes, sometimes some fruit, it changes depending on what I'm doing, how long I did it, and my goals at the time.

Sorry, not really a great answer.

no problem, Thanks.

I dont understand why people consider milk as a good source or carbs, though. It has a lot of sugar, doesnt it?

PWO and HIIT it's fine provided you're not lactose intolerant. It's fairly insulogenic as well (even though GI is moderate) Do a search, there's lots of stuff on skim milk here (most of the good stuff is from emma-leigh fyi).
