Well I couldnt get outside for my jog today, so I used my sisters elliptical machine. In a 1/2 hour session it says I burnt 254 Calories. Does that sound about right to you guys?
Effort was moderate

I wouldn't trust any machine that tells you an exact amount of calories burned based solely on the tempo you used. It's an educated guess at best.

Sounds okay to me. I use a heart rate monitor and what you've said fits in with my numbers. However, in my experience, machines always state MORE calories burned than my heart rate monitor - so in general Witchblade is right, they are not to be trusted!

The rule is to follow the following equation:
S^I / T+ (HR x 2) - (St x 2) =Calories burned
So if your....
(S)peed = 8 mph (moderate)
(I)ncline = 4
(T)ime = 30 min
HR(x2) = 140
(St)trides p/min(x2)
So...
8^4 =4096/ 30 + 280 - 162 = 254.33
Almost perfect.

Thanks Goob, I didn't know that equation, but it does seem pretty usefull.
To the others, I know that you cant really trust a machines output screen as the basis of your cardio results, I was just after a general figure that wasnt blown out of proportion, so that I could track cals out vs In etc.
It was nice to do something different for cardio, and I wasn't pounding my shins into oblivion so thats a bonus too. I might mix it up a bit more often rather than just running/sprinting intervals
