Home Gym

I know this post will get slammed but I will ask anyway. Me and my wife work different shifts and I work alot. We have a year old boy and one due in november. I went to the gym before my first child was born and since then I don't have time because when I am home I am watching him. I was going to get some type of home gym. I know free weights are the best and I am not here to argue that point. I was wondering if something like a bowflex would work? My space is really limited since all my bedrooms are taken and alot of my time is when I get home from work which is around 12am. I just need something to get into shape while my kids are little.

Squat rack, bench, oly barbell, 2 oly dumbells, lots of weight. You're all set.

no reason you cant get good results from a home gym,
i think jack lalane had a tv show on about 100 years ago showing us how to do push ups and dips between chairs triceps with a chair and so on.
determine what your goals are.of course you dont have the diversity of a gym with home training but if your not going to compete you can prob. get what you want if your honest with yourself.
will you really train at home?consistently.
figure out what exercises you need to do and check out if a bowflex has the capacity think the bowflex lets you change exercices pretty fast and has quite a bit of exercise variety.

i got cut off in the middle so i will finish,
ive never been a fan of a bowflex, and think the cable type handles would really be hard to get used to,but im sure there are a lot of guys on this forem that use these things a can tell you more.

I think if you have the space, go for it. The only reason i go to the gym at all is because i havent got the room for all the equipment id need. Home gyms ftw.

Squat Rack, Barbell, Dumbells, Bench, Pullup Bar, Dip Bar. Thats all you need, and then some.

A bench and a squat rack will take up a good chunck of room. I'd go with the bench and get some dumbells. You can always do lunges, step ups, etc., for your legs. I don't work out at home anymore but I still have a bench and I keep four sets of dumbbells underneath it.

A simple, A-frame squat rack, doesn't take up that much room. All it means is that you need to move some stuff around when you workout.

That's how I do it.

True. I'd get more of a workout moving stuff around. I don't have one of those, but don't need it now.

I could actually make one of those pretty easily.

All you need is a Bench (No rack required), and a pair of the adjustable dumbbells, preferably the automatic ones... it will take less space than a bowflex.

like that, but without the DB stand.

Who needs BB squats, and Deadlifts?
DB's are just as good, and don't require a power rack. Plus they are safer for single lifting because they are easier to drop than a barbell in case of an emergency.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not (it seems my sarcasm meter really is broken ), but, even though I had to move stuff around, I was able to do HIT workout in as little as 8 and half minutes.

IMO. all u need is. pullup/dip bar, squat rack, bench, Weight, oly DBS, Bar

I went to Dick's Sporting Goods yesterday and bought 2 olympic dumb bells, olympic weight set with bar and 300 lbs of weights, a olpmpic curl bar, and this gym
Marcy MP3100 Smith & Bench. Paid right at 700 dollars for all. I also got the leg curl attachment. Will get the bicep curl attachment and weight tree later. Have not got it all put together yet but It will fit my needs.

They had a bowflew there and I really didn't care for it. It seemed really cheap. Thanks for everyones help.

No I wasn't. My gym room at home is really small. I get a pretty good workout just shuffling stuff around.

The only problem i have with training at home (I have a barbell 2 dumbells and alot of plates) is that I dont want to get stuck while I bench

Agreed, not having a spotter and working at home can be trick with bench pressing, certainly not a good idea to go for any one rep maxes!

Do what I did and go ghetto. I picked up two metal, adjustable, sawhorses.

If I do a 1 rep max at home I will just use the smith machine barbell. I know it is cheating but I dont like crushed body parts.

I think what you bought is cool - good luck and its great to see you back training!

co signed that was a really good i dea i did the same thing

just keep the locks off while benching, and you can dump the bar to your right or left, if it ever gets stuck on you.

That's fine at a gym, but it's a different story if ditching means that you risk taking out your computer, your stereo, or putting a hole in the wall.

I did that once when i worked out in my room many years ago.

My room was upstairs.

I had no idea plastering the ceiling downstairs would cost so much.

Suffice to say, i used dumbells from then on.

True story

Posted by: JonnyStead

Blimey - is that 'cause you dumped the weights off the bar?

No, i farted during the rep.

Seriously though, there wasnt really THAT much on the bar, this was years ago when i weighed less than about 140lbs, so it could only have been about 50-60lbs that fell off the one side.

are you serious? so if you fell of your bed you would have went through the floor

Lol, dudes...i get the impression you all think it went THROUGH the floorboards?

It just cracked all the plaster on the ceiling downstairs because of the impact, and put a massive dent upstairs in the boards - there was no massive hole or anything!

A few more plates, then maybe there would have been. Thank god for newbieism.

Still, im sure theres still a crack there, even though its all been done over.

you can trace impact forces in pounds per inch, which would probably be the kind of impact you would expect from plates hitting the ground. multiply the weight by the acceleration of gravity and you have hundreds of pounds of force impacting over the space of a few inches. hell yeah that could do damage.

Physics hates my floor, it really does.

Sure, those bowflexes are cool. Everyone rags on them because they can't get you to elite levels, but really who cares? I bet most people who rag on them can't even max them out. Even if you did max them, they'd always be there for doing endurance work, doing something to maintain mass if you're sick or can't go out, or to share with friends/family, or for hard levering exercises like flies.

Posted by: brian2440

Well I got my home gym done. I added a punching bag and got a cross trainer. I also added some more weights. I paid something like 2100 dollars for all. I would of paid about the same for a bowflex but I can do a ton more with what I got.

Posted by: CowPimp

If you're going to spend the money on a Bowflex, then I would instead purchase adjustable dumbbells, a nice set of powerlifting bands, an adjustable bench, and a pullup/chinup bar. You could purchase all that for a mere fraction of the cost of a Bowflex and have plenty of choices available for a solid workout.

Posted by: brian2440

I didnt get the bowflew. Spent about the same amout of money and got alot more stuff. LOL I finally got all of my gym done and work out on monday and have gotten a cold from somewhere and feel like ass.
