For a beginner what is a good type of martial art or is boxing better to start with? I want to learn more for self defense such as street fights, possibly get into competitive.

What is in your area? I mean as far as real places to train are concerned. You need to be very selective.

Kickboxing/Muai Tai & Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. You need to be well-rounded, so don't neglect one or the other.

theres simple karate places which im pretty sure i dont want to do. theres one place that has boxing karate jujitsu and mma which seems pretty good. then theres a real good wing chun place i visited the guy is top notch or appeared to be from the original wing chun style in bruce lees lineage. but its 1000$ for 6months, a little to much for me. i havent been abnle to find any muy thai places around i heard they were good. i was thinkin jujitsu and boxing might be the way to go.

Avoid the karate place and the Bruce Lee place. Unless you're looking to become a master of that style then specificity of fighting styles is old school and way toooooo limiting.

The MMA joint looks promising. How are they equipped? Look for smaller training tools like focus mitts and target pads as well as solo training gear like heavy bags and wall bags. Look at how big the classes are and how many trainers they have along with the more obvious stuff like will the classes fit your schedule. Most places have an introductory special so you can get a class in and actually talk to the people you will train with.
