NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, according to league sources. NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion. Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents. The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Tuesday that no official decision has been made and that the club has not been notified. The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game. Goodell is expected to have a decision no later than Friday but that is not set in stone. Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN. |
Multiple times.

Does anyone know why Belichick and Mangini hate each other? I mean, they used to coach together for christ sake.
I think a good punishment would be to force the Pats to watch JD Drew try to hit a baseball out of the infield.
I always knew the Pats were a shady bunch.
They should have to forfeit their Super Bowl victory over the Rams. |
On sports talk radio in Phoenix this morning, they were talking about the irony of the Pats getting caught for this against the Jets. The host of the show said that he wouldn't be suprised if it was Mangini (sp?) that used to hold the camera or review the tapes for Belichek back in the day.
What ever it is, clearly Romeo Crenell and Charlie Weiss have not used any of the tactics taught to them by Belichek. |
Scratch that... They hate eachother.
New York Daily News - A former assistant under Bill Belichick, Eric Mangini arrived in New York last year with an insider's knowledge of the Patriots' sign-stealing surveillance tactics and he shared the secret with members of the Jets' organization, a person with knowledge of the matter informed the Daily News yesterday. It wasn't until the fifth Mangini-Belichick showdown - last Sunday - that the Jets were able to catch the Patriots. Tipped off by Jets security, an NFL security official confiscated a video camera and tape from a Patriots employee at the Meadowlands, and the evidence is believed to be incriminating. "(The Jets) knew they did it," the person with knowledge of the situation said in an e-mail to the Daily News. "They caught the guy a year ago, but couldn't do anything about it. When Eric came, he said that's what they used to do. Bill is going to be (ticked) at Eric. He kissed and told." |

I absolutely love how it was the Patriots that got caught for cheating. They have won how many Super Bowls in the past several years, and still need to cheat to beat the Jets. Bill Belichick acting like he did nothing wrong. anyone see the press conference? hilarious. Dude got caught but won't admit it until the commish lays the smack down. He should be suspended if he knew it was happening, at the very least.
but there are a bunch of naive people out there if they don't think every team in the NFL is trying to steal signals as well.
Well, as a Pats fan, i think it's hypocritical that they don't want "Undesirables" on the team while the head coach cheats.
Dale, I love you, but you can't honestly be comparing the Patriots philosophy of avoiding convicted felons to having a head coach that tries to get a competitive on field advantage.

The difference is that it is against the rules to videotape the opposing coaches. There is no rule against watching the opposing coaches.
And BB should have been suspended too. |
Then why do the broncos suck if they know what plays are being called.
I think the Patriots and Bill Belichick got off lucky. What Roger Goodell did in penalizing Belichick was significant, but he did not ban Belichick from coaching for even a week for repeatedly cheating -- after being warned 12 months ago to not videotape other teams' coaches signaling in plays from the sidelines. When Dallas assistant coach Wade Wilson got suspended five games and fined $100,000 this month for using the banned substance HGH to treat impotency, Goodell told him coaches have to be held to a higher standard. |
| One problem: Every time the Eagles rushed Brady in the Super Bowl, the Patriots nullified the defensive attack with screen passes. Lots of them. On almost every play defensive coordinator Jim Johnson called for a blitz, the Patriots used the short pass to confuse the Eagles. |
Give me a fucking break. Are all the teams who lost to the Patriots going to look back and say .. "well, they were a little fishy here" .. and "i think they cheated here" .. they all need to shut the fuck up. Bunch of whiny little babies who can't admit that they were outplayed, out coached and outmatched.
We're never going to hear the end of it for the rest of this season. I hope it will fire the Patriots up and prove everyone wrong that they are still the best in the league. |

For shame........
Ask the Broncos...but I don't remember the last time the Broncos really sucked

This whole thing is pathetic. So from what I'm reading, it's LEGAL to steal signals with binoculars, lip reading and from the box but ILLEGAL to do the same with a video camera.
![]() Oh yeah, the Pats are such big cheaters. ![]() OMG how can they ever live with themselves. They used a video camera instead of binoculars For shame........ |
... so I'm not the only person that thinks this whole thing is fuggin insane?

2007 season
On September 10, a Patriots video assistant was caught by NFL security filming the New York Jets' defensive signals. Jets coach Eric Mangini, a former Patriots assistant, tipped off league officials that the Patriots might have been filming their signals. After the game, the Jets formally complained to the league. Two days later, Belichick issued a statement "to apologize to everyone who has been affected," and also cited he spoke with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about Belichick's "interpretation of the rule[4]." On September 13, Belichick was officially fined $500,000 USD--the the biggest fine ever imposed on a coach in the league's 77-year history,[5] and the maximum permitted under league rules. The Patriots were also fined $250,000. Additionally, the Patriots will forfeit their first round draft pick in the 2008 NFL Draft if they make the playoffs. If the Patriots do not make the playoffs, they will forfeit their second and third round selections in the 2008 draft. He said that he fined the Patriots as a team because Belichick is effectively the team's general manager as well as head coach, and exercises so much control over the Patriots' on-field operations that "his actions and decisions are properly attributed to the club."[6] According to ESPN's John Clayton, many of Belichick's colleagues felt he should have been forced to sit out one or two games.[7] Goodell seriously considered suspending Belichick, but decided not to do so because he felt that the loss of one or more draft picks "is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension." With most NFL experts picking the Patriots to run away with their fifth consecutive AFC East title (and sixth in the last seven years}, they may become the first team in NFL history to forfeit a first-round pick.[8] Belichick issued a statement in which he apologized for what he called a "mistake" in his interpretation of the rules. However, he denied ever using videotape to gain an advantage while a game was underway.[9] Bill Belichick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Cheaters may they rot in hell |

Here's the difference since you can't figure it out yourself.
If it's recorded on tape, it can be played over and over. Every movement, every little nuance can be observed REPEATEDLY. If someone is just watching, they get ONE CHANCE to observe everything. If something is missed, it's gone. If the taping had been done by some other team against NE and NE wound up losing the game, how many of you Pats fans would be having the same reaction? |

Stealing is stealing no matter how you look at it.

This was a great night! It was a big FUCK YOU to all the haters out there

No hate here. We all know they are a great team......just wondering why he would cheat against the lowly Jets......
The man is a genius but he has a knack for doing odd things.. |

Will keep hating and hopefully the Pats will stop cheating.

I don't see what the big deal is.
Lets take a shitty team for Example... Like the Giants or Jets. If they were caught doing this, then no one would give a shit. I am will to bet that the Pats aren't the only one doing this. |
They probably.
Can you imagine all the hoopla if the Yankees were stealing signs against the kansas city Royals, there would be riots in the streets. And before anyone mentions about the yankees using their money to buy players...it's legal. |

And so the flood of all the cheaters come afloat.

Understandable but Man-gina should have thought twice before opening his trap. He just wanted to take the attention off how bad the Jets suck. Maybe he should have thought that he might get caught too.
I agree, cheating is cheating and stealing is stealing and no team should be doing it. But I hope they all come out of the woodwork now. This whole ordeal against the Pats has been ludicrous and it's been a witch hunt. Now I hope they nail everyone out there that is cheating too. |
