I have always had trouble with knee pain (probably caused by the fact that I have extremely flat feet for which I need orthapedic inserts in my shoes). I am pondering using knee bands, but I have heard that using equipment such as knee bands and back belts aren't that beneficial since they take prevent the muscles around the knee joint ( or in the case of belts, back) from developing as if no bands or belts were used. Is there veracity to this claim, or is it nonsense?

Also, for people that do use knee bands, are there any particular ones that you really prefer?

Depends on the kind of knee bands. Elastic knee bands are a no no. They just help you to lift more weight.
The neon band things that keep your knees warm are OK.

I wouldn't use any supporting equipment for the reasons already mentioned either. I'd do very light leg extensions in the 15 - 20 rep range. This worked for a friend of mine. All pain was gone within 3 weeks.
