for as long as i can remember i have been getting a bad pain in the middle of my lower back when ever i start doing an ab excersise such as cruches or lying leg raises

i usually can only get up to about 10 reps when the pain start to kick in and i have to stop. it usually subsides straight away and i dont feel pain at any other time of the day.

however there are some ab excersises which dont seem to affect my back as much. for instance i can do cruches on an inflatible swiss ball no problem, or hanging leg raises. however id like to expand my training to new excersises

any idea what might be causing this, or how i can eleviate the pain?

Search for a thread called 'IM Official FAQ' and see if you have an anterior tilt of the pelvis.

How long have you been training?

It's silly to do an exercise, if it hurts.

Could also be bad form on the exercises, read up of correct form.

i didnt say i keep doing the excersises

what i said was ive tried them a few times but stopped once the pain started

i've had the same problem..and it turns out its was just bad form..its because you don't keep your back's natural arc curved and your back muscles pull to keep its natural shape and fatigue hence the pain. try squeezing your abs whenever you rise up ..and its supposed to counteract what your back muscles are doing

i tried doing what you suggested and this really seems to help. for years i have kept my lower back flat on the ground, withour realising this was causing the pain.
i do still get some pain however when i reach a certain number of reps. is there any kind of stretching or excersise that i can do to strengthen my lower back?
