Lean and ripped?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

A few days ago someone mensioned that it was easy to get skinny and ripped and that actaully pumping up was harder. How easy is it to get skinny and riped? Why kind of diet is needed? What kind of work out? Cardio I am sure but...what?

Posted by: msoper

When I say skinny I mean lower my body fat % so the muscles show through because I am naturally pretty muscular but I have a thin layer of fat over anthing. I know alot of ppl on my swim team who had like 5% body fat...one of them ran like 5-9 miles a day!!! Is this way a good way to burn fat? Running, Jogging, Sprinting? I know that diet but I have already been working on that.

I'm gonna bump you over to the nutrition section for some good help.

Who said that it's easy to get ripped?

Both bulking and cutting take discipline and attention to detail regarding a sound nutritional plan. To cut BF, you need to create a caloric deficit through diet & exercise, however meal composition is very important. Cardio is overated as you tend to lose LBM and should only be used as a last resort when diet alone stalls progress.

uh,
If it was easy for people to get ripped,
then why are 60% of the people in the US over weight and/or obese?
In addition to 1 out of 4 children being overweight.
I find it very difficult to drop BF at times.
I am a PIG!
Oink! Oink

Prince...I made the comment on the Brad Pitt thread about it being easy to be skinny and ripped. What I mean by skinny is a weight trainer who may be muscular but is light for his/her height. Say for example a person who is 6'0 but only weighs 165 lbs @ 6-8% bf that is very light for that height. At that point your body is a calorie-burning machine and to "maintain" that is fairly easy, especially if one's caloric intake is low and the level of exercise is high.

take 2 people one at 6'0 165 lbs @ 6-8% bf and another at 6'0 225 @ 6-8% bf. realistically the weight trainer at the heavier weight has to "work" a lot more at maintaning his much higher amount of LBM than the other.

Chest ...you have to remember the majortiy of people in the U.S do not care about being physically fit which is why they are obese.

The majority of people I know have not exercised since they HAD to in high school. most people do not like change especially if it takes EFFORT. bad habbits are easy to keep as it takes no effort, you just keep on doing what you have been doing.

Misinformation.

(This has nothing to do with thsi thread but i thought i'd add it anyway.)

Misinformation
I don't know about that TCD, I've been watching a documentary about New Orleans tonight
(I'm European and plan to visit someday).
The most striking thing about that documentary was that more than 3/4th of all people on the streets there were FAT ..
not a little, but really Obese .. Lardasses with Hamburgers and Pie on the Side in their hands.

Are things that bad on the other side of the Atlantic?
Are there any official numbers around to prove this (or prove wrong)? Maybe even for Europe?

Posted by: The_Chicken_Daddy

Well yes, there is the fact that humans are lazy.

But there's also a helluva lot of people who believe fat makes you fat and carbs are healthy.** With all the "low fat" products around this doesn't suprise me. People are unwilling to believe that they'll do better by dropping the suagr and upping the fat.

**Note, i'm not saying carbs are unhealthy so calm down.

I think that statistic is probably pretty accurate, do you have a source for a more accurate statistic?

Posted by: The_Chicken_Daddy

No, i just made a generalisation of what i personally think to be the main contributing factor.

People do the slim fast diet, but little do they know that the shakes are full of sugar.

People avoid fat at all costs thinking it'll make them fat.

People drink "energy drinks" (read: liquid sugar) thinking that it's better and may "fuel" their cardio (which it does in essence, but at the expense of potential fat burning) and help them lose more weight.

People eat "energy bars" (read: solid sugar) thinking that it's a "healthy snack".

People are misinformed.

Other contributing factors:

People are careless with calories and their estimates are way off.

People eat...shit, basically.

People don't exercise enough.

no, i meant the post you made about 60% of the people in the US over weight and/or obese, you said "misinformation".

Posted by: The_Chicken_Daddy

lol, aren;t we all a little confused here?

Chesty asked why 60% of american are obese. I stated that i believe it to be down to misinformation.

I wasn't saying his figure was misinformed haha.

Posted by: Prince

oh, okay.

Posted by: Sub-Zero

This IS true, according to MANY sources .....

50% of USA is overweight
25% of USA is clinically obese

& what saddens me is, child obesity is rising

Posted by: msoper

Where can I get my body fat checked? Do those Sharper Image machines work.........how about the calculators?

Posted by: Preacher

I'm terribly sorry there TCD, guess I got Prince on the wrong track too ...
I really tought that your "misinformation" applied to the percentages.
But you're right .. Just take a look at the "health" section in European supermarkets:
"Slim fast", Meal Replacement shakes (with 0.1% fat and 65% of "carbs" - that can't be bad).

I believe there's a Musclehedz comic about it where some fat guy gets
his bf% measured and exclaims: "85%! Whoa, sounds good!"

Posted by: Mudge

The electro-static machines are hit or miss, generally not accurate.

Get some calipers, cheap, and you can do the 3 point measurement yourself.

I would like to challenge this assertion w8. I will agree that anaerobic exercise is far superior to aerobic exercise in terms of fat loss, but I do not think aerobic exercise will lead to a significant amount of muscle loss if done correctly and with a proper diet.

Yeah, potentially true.

Some people use cardio to create a further calorie deficit.

Some use it for potential hormonal effects.

These are all good, but too much cardio can lead to localised overtraining of the thighs and hams and can result in muscle loss.

It's tit for tat in the end, really. You should expect to lose at least some muscle when cutting, just try and minimise the damge.

In Canada they classify obesity according to BMI...anything over a BMI of 30 is considered Grade 1 obesity, meaning someone like myself (5'11'') would be considered obese at 213 lbs. When I think obese it is usually someone that is really fat and slovenly...not simply a little bit overweight.

According to these criteria is how they can publish stats that over 50% of us in North America are "obese". I think in Canada the stat is closer to 60% for real, must be all the beer and back bacon...damn that beer with an actual alcohol content.

I too hate the body mass index...I am 5'10" at about 190-200lbs, with very low body fat, and I am considered to be quite overweight. It pisses me off, the same goes for a lot of my friends who are more muscular...
