To add to what P said...

Optimizing Strength Training by Fleck & Kraemer
Specifically deals with nonlinear periodization.

Explosive Power and Strength by Chu
Actually just covers Complexes, but a great read.

OK... Time for a stupid question... What are complexes?

w/thx,
G.
PS. Nice to see that they're available and affordable. Many of P's were either unavailable or up around $50. I'm not complaining really. It's nice to have them listed. It'll just take a while to either find 'em or afford 'em, that's all.

There is sort of 2 definitions of what a complex is:

1) The more popular one is a series of exercises performed without rest, one right after the other, without putting the bar down and for the same number of repetitions. For example:

5 reps of each exercise without rest:
Power clean
Front Squat
Jerk
Split squat
behind the neck jerk
bent over row

2) the other definition is a strength exercise followed by a power exercise (sometimes this is used in a power phase of training). Some literature says to rest between the two, other literature says to go immediatly into the power exercise after the strength exercise and then rest. For example:

a) Squat- 3-5 reps
b) Jump squat- 8-10

or

a) Bench press- 3-5
b) MB chest pass- 8-10

I've only read a few pages of each at the moment (I've been reading ;) but I'm still dreaming of crushing pop-cans and potatoes one of these days.

Milo Strength Journal from Ironmind.com is also an excellent resource of information on training ideas both old and new.

OK P-Funk and Dale if you had to recommend two books on weight lifting to someone which two books would you recommend?

Posted by: Minhkey

I just got starting strength, and it helped a lot
I started squatting this week, and am sore as hell. I'll try to read up on deadlifting this weekend =)
