Johan Santana talk burns up hot stove; Mets, Yankees among suitors

All signs point to Johan Santana likely leaving the Twins, but who will win the sweepstakes?

With Alex Rodriguez refitted for pinstripes, Johan Santana's status as a lame-duck Minnesota Twin likely will be the story line that dominates the rest of baseball's offseason.
Perhaps Santana will remain in Minnesota, where he's slated to earn $13million in the last year of a four-year, $40 million deal. Although the sides have disagreed on a contract extension - Santana recently rejected a four-year, $80 million offer - the pitcher always has enjoyed playing in the Twin Cities. The lefty holds the power of a no-trade clause and probably wouldn't approve any trade unless a lucrative extension came with the deal.
The Twins might want to trade Santana this winter or at the July 31 trade deadline rather than risk losing him as a free agent after the 2008 season. It's unlikely any team would agree to give the Twins the package they reportedly want of ready major league talent - they need a third baseman and a center fielder - and several top prospects, unless it got a window to attempt to negotiate an extension with Santana. If there were no extension, the deal would be off.
Mets GM Omar Minaya has said upgrading his team's starting pitching is a priority, and 10 days ago, Hank Steinbrenner told The Associated Press, "Obviously, there will be an interest in Santana."
The Yankees might have more to deal than the Mets, but only if they are willing to give up pitchers such as Phil Hughes along with regulars such as Robinson Cano or Melky Cabrera. But other teams might have more to offer than both New York clubs.

The Hank era has begun. What do you think Cashman thinks of him?

From what I've heard they are not happy with him opening his mouth, he talks about deals before they happen.

Not only does he talk about deals, he's gone against his word more times than George ever did.

There's something about saying A-Rod has no place in New York and then giving him $305 million dollars over the next ten years.

Personally, I don't think the Yankees have enough to get Santana unless they stop being stupid and give up Hughes, Joba, Cano, and Cabrera.

I wouldn't give up on any of them.

To be fair when A-Rod opted he basically said if you don't want to be a yankee than we wont kisss your ass to get you back.
He doesn't want anyone who doesn't want to be there.

The Yankees refused to tlak to Arod unless he got rid of Boras...he did.

I did hear about Lester in the deal.
THe Yankees may get desparete and deal away in order to prevent Bosox from getting him.

I'm glad to hear the Red Sox are getting involved in this. Even if they don't get him, it's nice to see them driving the price up for the Yankees. And the Sox have the prospects to make their interest seem legit, even if they're just blowing smoke.

If you can get Santana without giving Buccholz, you do it. Even if that means Ellsbury. The cool part about that stance is that the Twins seem to be just as interested in Crisp as they are in Ellsbury, and with their trade tonight now have an opening at short stop, a position where Jed Lowrie is blocked by Julio Lugo.

Crisp, Lester and Lowrie is way better than any package the Yankees can put together if they aren't willing to give up either Hughes, Chamberlain, or Cano.

Please don't lie. If anything your parents taught you, this should be one that you learn.

The Twins can blow one, they want too much.

Sources: Yankees passing on Johan Santana, turning toward Dan Haren

NASHVILLE - Cross Johan Santana off the Yankees' holiday shopping list.
The Yankees' self-imposed deadline came and went Monday night at the winter meetings without a deal being reached with the Twins, making it unlikely the Bombers will land the two-time Cy Young winner.

The offer of Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and a mid-level minor-league prospect had been on the table since late last week, but the Twins decided not to move on it just yet, waiting to see what other offers would present themselves in the coming days.
Monday night, a Yankees source told the Daily News that the Santana negotiations were over.
"I just don't think they were ready to do a deal," the source said. "We're moving on."

According to a second source, the Yankees now plan to turn their attention toward Oakland starter Dan Haren, who is currently being shopped. Although the righthander, 27, isn't as proven as Santana, 28, he is more attractive in a financial sense, as he is set to make $4 million in 2008 and $5.5 million in 2009 with a 2010 option for $6.75 million.

Oakland GM Billy Beane is said to be looking for a package of four players in exchange for Haren, with Hughes and Cabrera once again the likely centerpieces if the Yankees are to be serious players.
The Yankees believe that, had the Twins found the offer for the lefthander to their liking, they would have completed a deal by now. Last week, the Twins tried to get Ian Kennedy included as the third player. After it became clear that the Yankees wouldn't include both Hughes and Kennedy, Minnesota wanted either righthander Alan Horne or outfielder Austin Jackson added instead.

The Yanks weren't prepared to include either top prospect, having initially relented to the Twins' earlier demand that Hughes be the pitcher in the trade instead of Kennedy.
Last night, the Twins tried to get Kennedy once again, but the Yankees wouldn't budge.

Hank Steinbrenner, who said Sunday that he was getting "irritated" with the slow nature of the talks, had issued a deadline of yesterday to get a deal done, but given the soft nature of the statement, it seemed the two sides could still negotiate if they felt they were close.
Steinbrenner declined to comment on the Santana situation yesterday, saying he would wait until there was a resolution one way or another.

"I don't want to comment on anything today. We've got a lot of stuff going on," Steinbrenner said late in the afternoon. "Tomorrow, we'll know everything." However, that statement was made before the Yankee source's comments leaked out.
The Yankees did add another lefthander to their rotation yesterday, as Andy Pettitte informed the club he would return for another season, but the Santana situation loomed large over the Opryland Hotel during the first day of the meetings.

GM Brian Cashman arrived in Nashville around 3 p.m., disappearing into the massive complex to conduct some meetings, but the Twins were not among the parties he spoke to during the course of the afternoon.
Cashman has been reluctant to deal any of his blue-chip prospects in recent years, building up what had been considered a barren farm system as recently as two years ago. Hughes falls into that category, but the Yankees knew they would have had to give up talent in order to acquire a pitcher of Santana's stature.

"If you're talking about that type of level of talent, it means you're obviously getting back a current star. That's how it works," Cashman said. "Those are the discussions you have, but who's to say where these discussions will lead us?"
Cashman made it clear it would take a lot to wrest away any of the Yankees' top young prospects, making a point of noting how far the system has come in the past few years.
"I'm definitely fully invested in a lot of young talent. You get attached to it," Cashman said. "There are a lot of guys here that we believe in. We're certainly proud of the work that we've done, because right now, I can sit at the table with any team in baseball and have a conversation. Two years ago, that wasn't the case."

Hughes, Cabrera plus a prospect for Santana is one thing, but that's too much for Haren. I hope NY doesn't make a trade just for the sake of making a trade.
