when considering running vs biking for fitness is it really just a matter of personal preference or is one better than the other?
i notice a lot of people run, is running better?
is there a difference if you look at it from an overall fitness (including strength) point of view against just cardio?

Depends how hard you work at it.
Although, I think running burns more calories by comparison, it's also worse on your joints too. Because running is more of a constant exersice, i.e you can free wheel on the bike, i think it does work you more.
But as stated, it depends on the intensity, - hard or hill biking would burn more calories than flat, easy pace jogging.
HIIT sprints for the win - Burns fat, increases leg muscle size and VO2, and is over in 10-20 minutes (of pure torture).....

If you're going to do it outside, choose running. There's a sense of accomplishment every time you develop enough endurance to run farther or decrease the time it takes to run a certain distance. You can do HIIT sprints at the end if you want to. I usually run 1.5 miles and on the last portion of the road I do four sets of sprints and brisk walks.
