I need your opinions to see if I am doing this right. My maintenance calories are 3100 for my wieght of 255 I am trying to go down to 200. I have cut my cals to 1700 and have started cardio duration of 60 min. Does this sound OK?

thats too much to start IMO. keep your calories at ~2600 and start with 30 mins of cardio 4-5 days a week. do this for a few weeks and then make adjustments according to results. if you drop your calories too low too fast then your body is going to get used to it and you will stop losing weight in a few weeks and have a hard time getting back into it.

what does your diet consist of? what kind of cardio are you doing?

Ugh. I'm on a 1500 cal/day diet from the Wall Street Journal. It's losing weight, but I cheat so it's probably 1700 cal, with basketball and running mixed in nearly every day.

You'll lose weight, guaranteed.

If by weight you mean massive amounts of muscle being lost. Read the stickies.

This is a short term fix.

Read the stickies, change your eating habits, halt the fad dieting, and get your life together.

believe me, i'm aware of the muscle loss, and i've talked it over with my mom and she just doesn't get it.

You can't forget about the muscle loss because you'll have loose skin believe me.

Absolutely - the quick fix that seems like a good idea at the time often ends up being far more frustrating than it needs to.

Everyone is right. Short term fixes FAIL. I tried that, and lost 30 lbs. and you know what ha[ppened? I lost it...my mind cracked under pressure. once my calculated, consise and restrictive diet came to an end, i gained back ALL of the weight over the winter. and i mean ALL of it. that was one of the most depresseing periods of my life... all of these people telling me i look amazing, ive lost so much weight, i buy new clothes, and then i gained it all back... it was horrible. i just couldnt fucking stop eating, like i was making up for the months of depravation.

Seriously, think LONG TERM. it is a life long change, not a temporary diet to lsoe weight. you make the decision to lose weight and carry out actions for it... thats why i dont stress if i had an extra beer, or a slice of pizza... because i continue to work out and exercise and i recognize it as a life long change, and see the big picture.

for the record, i have lost those 30+ lbs, and have kept it off for 6 months so far (while continuing to improve my physique and health). Best of luck to you

I know its hard, but you have to realize, that is a loss of 55 lbs your looking at... that is a life changing amount, dont expect it over night. you may feel your efforts are in vain if the scale stops moving, but as long as you keep at it with weight training at least 3 times a week and cardio, you will get visibly leaner. Healthy weight loss is anywhere from .5 to 2 lbs a week, and 2 lbs is stretching it.

Just remember that it will take time. i would expect to reach that goal around 8-12 months, with a healthy long term way of eating and regular exercise.

I'd also add that building muscle will help you lose weight as muscle tissue sucks up calories. Going into starvation mode and losing muscle is the last thing you want to do.

Also if you're 55lbs overweight then 60 mins of cardio is going to be hell on your knees - I hope you're not jogging? Get an elliptical and take it steady - your heart is already under strain. Arnold'sP is right, shift it slowly but steadily and think long term.

Starvation mode is the last thing anyone should want - seriously, it's no good and for most people the body never fully recovers...

In other words, just chiming in again: skip the quick fix, and build muscle instead - you'll see results faster and they'll last longer.
