Which protein for protein bars?

Hi guys,

I'm about to make my own protein bars but not sure which protein powder to use.

I prefer soya protein the best but it says to consume within 20 mins of mixing.

I'm worried that If I produce a batch they will go bad quickly.

Should I use a different source of protein?

Posted by: Witchblade

Yes, casein. Give your poisonous soy protein to some hobo.

All jokes aside, soy is still being researched. It's like aspartame: there is no conclusive evidence yet, but most findings indicate it's crap.

Posted by: Gordo

I'd probably use whey or casein

No worries with storage...freeze them. Unthaw in the microwave (usually 30sec on high is enough).

+1 for warning about soy, unless you like bitch tits and flabby bits?

By the way, what do you want the bars for exactly? General nibbles, breakfast, night snack?

The time of day would influence my choice, whey for brekkie, casein for nite-nibbles, sorta thing.

I have never thought of making my own protein bars. Anyone got any good recipes?

source?

I'd really like to read where you got the idea that soy will produce bitch tits.

Well this search took about 2 seconds:

"Have you ever wondered about soy? It's promoted as the miracle food that will feed the world while at the same time prevent and cure all manner of diseases.

But what if all you've read about soy is nothing but a multi-million dollar marketing strategy based on scanty facts, half-truths and lies?

Most people remain unaware that soy is known to contain an array of potent chemical toxins. The modern manufacturing processes of high-profit industries make no effort to remove these potent toxins. High levels of phytic acid, trypsin inhibitors, toxic lysinoalanine and highly carcinogenic nitrosamines are all present in soy products.

Phytoestrogens that disrupt endocrine function and are potent antithyroid agents are present in vast quantities in soy, including the potentially devastating isoflavone Genistein. Infants exclusively fed soy-based formula have 13,000 to 22,000 times more estrogen compounds in their blood than babies fed milk-based formula, the estrogenic equivalent of at least five birth control pills per day. Premature development of girls has been linked to the use of soy formula, as has the underdevelopment of males. Infant soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease."

Oh I used to love making my own like that, till I realised there's no brand of peanut butter out there not made with transfats. Bummer.

You can make your own peanut butter (just blend some peanuts with a dab of flaxseed oil and butter) but then it became too much hassle.

I also intended to but never got round to researching what happens if you make protein powder wet and leave it for extended periods. If using pricey free form stuff does it 'go off' so's to speak?

Probably a dumb question but learning about nitrogen atoms bound by carbon doesn't really answer it

What are you talking about?

There are tonnes of Peanut only Peanut Butters available.

There are? Not in my local supermarket there aren't. Then again I live in Borneo

I dont think I've ever seen a peanut butter with trans-fat.... Am I missing something? Especially the natural kind, its just peanuts and salt

Posted by: Biggly

I don't have any to check the label but when I first got into this bodybuilding thing I looked carefully at the ingredients of everything I ate - and every brand I looked at showed partially hydrogenated oil, ie transfats.

I can't recall the brands but there were about 6 different ones, including 2 American.

Just did a quick sniff around:

In 1922, Joseph L. Rosefield developed modern peanut butter by using finer grinding, hydrogenation, and an emulsifier to keep the oil from separating. This created a creamy texture unlike the earlier peanut butter described as gritty, or pasty. He received a patent for stable peanut butter which had a shelf life of up to a year.

Wiki

Apparantly you can indeed get 'natural' peanut butter, but harder to spread and separates, with the oil on top?

If you put natural PB in the fridge it won't seperate. Yes the texture is different and so is the taste. I enjoy it better.

However it pales in comparison to Almond Butter.

Posted by: Biggly

Mmmm, almonds...

Well I did some further sniffing, found this:

Peanut butter is trans fat free

According to that there's not enough transfats to notice, which is good news.

So PB is back on the menu

Your specific comment is inaccurate....soy does not produce "bitch-tits". Most of the concerns are cancerous in nature. Early development in females and under-development in young males.

I'm not debating that it's a crappy protein for everyday but instead the bitch-tits comment.

Posted by: Zave

well thanks for the insight, I shall change to whey or casein. I remember the whey used to give me bad guts but the soy never did. I shall be eating the bars as a between meal snack at about 10am and 4pm

Posted by: hardgainpete

come on guys, got any protein bar recipes please

Trader Joes' salted, unblanched peanut butter ingredients: Peanuts, salt. Price $1.69/lb. Tranfats, zero.

Posted by: Zave

So I check out the protein powder today and they all say consume within 20 mins. I know that after an hour protein shakes stink so I'm not sure if I want to make protein bars out of it that i'm gonna keep in the fridge for a few days.

Posted by: tucker01

keep it in the freezer and take out when you are going to use
