sometimes you are editing a longer post when the time runs out. it sucks.

Posted by: MCx2

Yes. I'm on a few other forums, and there is no limit. I don't understand it at all.

Posted by: Prince

I increased the time to 20 minutes for editing your post, there are good reasons for having this limit set that I have explained a couple of times in the past.

That's weird, you said the same thing last time... I still haven't found an actual reason.

You say there are reasons, yet no real answers. Unless it was over 4 years ago, I can't find it.

because if members don't like responses to their thread and/or post they can go back later and change what they said and it messes up the context of the thread, make sense?

That's the only reason? So what if the reason they wanted to change the the post in the first place because it made absolutely no sense and it had already messed up the context of the thread? It's not like it goes unnoticed, it's noted when a post is edited. Definitely a 2 way street. And it's pretty obvious by the links I provided that people want that option and have wanted it for a long while.

I figured that it messed up the way the board ran or something, not something as silly as that. Oh well.

Posted by: Prince

you may think that is silly, but I don't see why anyone needs to go back and edit a post after 20 minutes.

I think LW's last thread is a perfect example. She was trying to set up something cool for the rest of us to look at, and the edit limitation ruined it. There's one reason. Like many said in the one thread I linked, it makes the journals extremely hard to follow when you have to make 5-6 posts on 1 days worth of diet. There's another reason. I mentioned before that sometimes you just type in something wrong and you can't fix it. Like P-Funk in a post I read yesterday. He typed in "places" I think in place of the word "planks." Nobody knew what the fuck he was talking about. Not to say he couldn't go back and fix it because he's a mod, but we can't. So, there's three reasons just off the top of my head as to why the limitation is silly.

How many times have you actually seen someone change a post that "ruined" a thread? It wasn't always like this, I remember being able to do it on this board when I first signed up. It was at the very least a few hours. I've never seen your example of changing a post, ruining a thread, but I've seen many instances that the limitation has, mostly journals.

I'm siding with Prince on this one. Yell, I've already had two losers go back and edit their posts to fuck up my reply to that post.

Besides, if it's really important to have it changed, such as accidentally using your real full name, you can ask a mod.

So this boils down to being an ego thing. Now I get it.

Posted by: tucker01

I don't care either way.

I can see both sides of the fence. It makes it easy for shit disturbs to cause problems. but like others there are posts I would love to go back and change but can't.

there is not a time limit if it is a new thread or new post so I really don't see your point here.

Huh? Did you read my post?

If I post something at 2:00, at 2:21 if I read the thread and I posted something that didn't make sense, I can't change it. How are you missing that point?

Only yours. This is about having faith in what's been written in a post.

your point about LW creating a long post that takes more than 20 minutes, that is the point I was referring to.

Posted by: Prince

btw, it was set at 10 minutes and I doubled it to 20 minutes based on this complaint.

Posted by: Little Wing

i edited the thing i was trying to post in microsoft word and it looked fine but then when i put it up here it added back all the weird formatting i couldn't see in word. some words were a different color font etc. sometimes a phone call or something interrupts making sure your links work or maybe you gave the wrong ingredients in a recipe, forgot to quote a source, thought of a great pic you could use to illustrate a post and it can take me a while to locate even the perfect smilie sometimes. and some of us are just anal

20 minutes is great. thank you

and if you quote what you're responding to, the original quote doesn't change with an edit so people would still know what you're responding to.

Posted by: PreMier

its a double edged sword.

however i wish picture comments could be edited.

Says the biggest egomaniac on the board.

Go drink another 2 liter of soda while you're preaching to people how bad pot is.

I brought up 3 valid points on why it should be changed, and I'm seeing only one reason why it shouldn't be, which seems more selfish to me than anything. Bah, who cares. It is what it is.

this arguement is one of the worst on IM ever. it's got the same intelligence as something danny would say. the only positive about it is that i can understand what you were trying to say

You're comparing soda (whose intake I've cut to 8%) to pot?!

when you upload a pic you have the option of not allowing comments, also you can always report the comment just like a post and we can edit it.

Makes sense to me as I have edited something on my blog to be respectable. I did so far after writing the original. Now the post you wrote may not apply. With all due respect I will delete your comment.

My online journal is fucked up with incorrect dates, incorrect workout data, and it is a bitch to post in because now I have to wait and do the entire day at one time rather than logging as I go. Then, I spend twice as much time proofreading for mistakes because I can't go back and fix them. Sometimes, I miss a mistake even when I proofread, and I can't go back and fix it. It would be easier to use a different site's online journal that allows me to make corrections, but I stay at IM journals because of loyalty. The 20 minute edit time sucks.

Thats a pretty good set of reasons I think.

I liked Online Journals the way it use to be when I started the thing nearly 2 years ago. I don't want to switch to blogs. I'm not demanding you fix it, I was just throwing in my two cents in regard to LW's post.

Edit time changed. It use to be a lot longer when I first started my journal.

Posted by: Prince

don't think so, how long do you remember it being?

Posted by: KelJu

A hell of a lot longer than 10 minutes.

Posted by: Prince

well, due to all of this complaining I am going to reduce it to 1 minute.

kidding, I increased it to 30 minutes, but that is it.

. This is the suggestion box, but if you can't say what you want to say in 30 minutes or less, on a message board no less, then it should be cut short.

Posted by: PreMier

i thought that it used to be 24hrs

Yeah it did.

Would it be possible to have an unlimited edit time in the journal section and 20-30min in the rest of the forums?
