Casein vs. whey: round 2

Look what I found in T-mag:
(someone reports from the conference):
********************************************

Scientists from Australia presented their work comparing a whey isolate vs. casein through resistance training on strength, body comp, and plasma glutamine. Thirteen subjects were given either 100% whey isolate or casein protein (1.5 gm/kg body weight/day) and were simultaneously under the careful eye of researchers who supervised each workout three days/week.

Interestingly, this group found that the 100% whey isolate was more effective at increasing muscle mass (~ 5 kg over 10 weeks) vs. the casein group who gained < 1 kg over the same time period. The whey group was also more effective at increasing strength and decreasing fat mass compared to the casein group. Both proteins seemed to prevent the typical decrease in plasma glutamine levels that are common with exercise (15). These results surprise me as they stand in stark contrast to other whey/casein studies; however, it is what it is and all research should be taken with a grain of salt.

***************************
I believe the previous study was done with hydrolyzates of casein and whey. Hydrolyzed whey won. Maybe this is the important thing - take hydrolyzed casein, but "whole" whey?

Too bad they don't give us more information, when and how much was taken etc

From 1-5kg though is a huge difference in body weight change, definately not a close outcome.

I personally have had excellent results with Whey Isolate (Early Morning & Post-Workout) + Miceller Casein (Afternoon & Bedtime)
Like I said, both are superb proteins but each has its own importance.
Thats why lately, I've been using Milk Protein Isolate (Biotest GROW) which contains both Casein & Whey Fractions....best of both worlds.

Hey freak show, which product did ya try?

Posted by: P-funk

Oh....lol, there is only one product so far.

this makes sense to me, as casein is slower burning and whey is so quick. so whey doesnt fill the subjects up, allowing more food intake. unfortunately, not enough info is given to form a complete opinion. (more lab facts). interesting debate though. as mudge says, its definately not a close call.
