Poliquin strap trick for front squats - this is how I do them:

u-tube demo of someone using them for a 500-lb front squat: YouTube - Craig Smith 500lb Front Squat

Posted by: Irons77

Can you buy them at Academy?

Posted by: DOMS

Apparently, the site that hosts the first image doesn't like me using it here. But I'm not going to fix it because I still think it's appropriate.

I really do hate Olympic-style.

Front squats cannot be comfortable

Posted by: Built

They are with straps like I posted.

You'd be surprised.

Poliquin, eh? That picture is right of Mike Boyle's Functional Training for Sports.

The strap technique works suprisingly well.

Personally, I go with the olympic style all the way. I've never had a problem with my wrists bending. I prefer it heavily because the bar feels much more locked in place and everything feels tighter.

If you plan on/already do doing cleans and other olympic movements stick with the traditional olympic style.

You're probably dropping your elbows too much and leaning too far forward.

Posted by: nadirmg

any thoughts on front squats for people with shoulder injuries? i'm lifting almost regularly now, but my rotator cuff stress happened 6 months ago.

seems like front "squts" my not be a good idea until i've completely recovered.

Posted by: fufu

Does your gym have a safety squat bar? That alleviates alot of stress on the shoulders during the squat.

Do your shoulders hurt when you front squat?

Posted by: danny81

wtf. my knees hit my elbows i cant get them to stick straight out like that

Posted by: nadirmg

well stop letting them hit your knees.

That may be due to the fact your knees are constantly behind your ears.

You aren't keeping your upper body vertical enough and you are letting your elbows dip down too much.

Stretch your wrists and/or use the strap method so you make the wrist positioning easier.

Remember to get under the bar very tight before you unrack.

Posted by: danny81

alright thanks im gnnna stretch em i dont like using straps

Posted by: Built

danny, have you TRIED using the straps like that? They aren't wrapped around your wrist or anything, really it's just so it turns it into a hammer grip.

Posted by: danny81

i dont like straps because then you dont work the stabilizers as much. im a fighter so i need the stabilizers alot

Posted by: nadirmg

the point of squats is not to exercise stabilizers in your shoulders. it's a leg work out. using straps won't affect the quality of your squat. if you're using your shoulders to help you 'lift' the weight during your squats then you're doing it wrong.

Yep, and if you read page 57, he attributes it to Poliquin.

i've always wondered what the advantage of a front squat over a back squat is? somebody can answer that Q if they want, but in the mean time i'll probably go google it :P

Posted by: Built

It forces proper form
More quad stimulation with less torque on the lower back, and less load, period.

Those are the reasons I like 'em, anyway.

Posted by: danzik17

Jesus christ, you scared me. Don't ever make me think danny81 came back again please, ever!

Quad dominant. Easy on the back too if you are having back soreness.
