artificial sweetners...??

Ok so whats the low down? I've read this and that but until coming to this forum I've never really felt I was getting accurate info. Seems that most around here have better sources that arent trying to sell a hidden agenda.

Any articles or input on aspartame vs sucralose or whatever info would be nice to know. Basically, how safe is this shlt??

Im not sure, but thats a good questiol. I have stopped using any and all artificial sweeteners just to be on the safe side... i used to love having my 2 daily green teas with a sweetener, but ive gotten used to drinking them plain, just in case lol.

I feel comfortable with Splenda in my tea and to add a little sweetness to the odd make-believe food (pureed cottage cheese, splenda, cocoa... tastes kinda like shitty cheesecake!), and stevia is safe (but I am not fond of the taste). I'm less comfortable with cyclamates and aspartame, but neither of these taste right to me anyway. Asulfame potassium works well with splenda in many commercial products (whey shake for example) and the little bit I may get in the odd shake costs me no sleep or worry, but I don't live on diet pop. Some folks take in a LOT of these substances. I'd say if you are relying heavily on artificially sweetened foods, take another look at your diet.

Oh and sugar alchohols. One word: fart-o-licious.

yea i have some stevia but its quite fake and bitter.

I used to eat equal packets when I was a tot. Loved em.

Another good natural sweetner along with Stevia is Xylitol.

Why do you like Xylitol, Jodi? I'm unfamiliar with it. It's a sugar alcohol, right?

It's all natural like stevia but with no funny aftertaste. It's granulated like sucrose and it measure in 1:1 ratio like sucrose. There are no chemicals and you even get a bonus.......it helps prevent tooth decay. Its found in sugarless gum like Trident too.

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol however but it's not like maltitol or sorbitol and give you cramps and digestion disruption.

Yeah, I've seen it in trident, and I vaguely recall now about caries, but not sure on the rest. How come it causes no gastric distress? The other ones - wow! Talk about paint-peeling farts!

HAHA I know what you mean. I can't touch those sugar alcohols at all. Too painful.

I'm not sure about why it doesn't cause the same problems. A few years back when I first found out about it I researched it and remember reading that. I know many other members here really like xylitol too without the digestive problems lol.

It's hard to find the damn stuff though. I remember having this argument before, but I could never find anything like that other than Stevia (which tastes like ass)

my local Garners and Whole Foods has xylitol...usually the natural markets have it. I would really hate to buy this stuff and it gas me out. Some stuff can really make me gastrically disrespectful.

I love it! "Gastrically disrespectful"!

People with diabetes can use artificial sweeteners. So can people on a weight-loss diet.
Findings from animal studies indicated that sodium saccharin (the chemical in artificial sweeteners) caused bladder cancer. However, studies on people haven't shown any link between bladder cancer risk and saccharin intake.

Is Stevia just like any other sweetener packet?

If so, I still only find Splenda, Equal, Sweet & Low, and Sugar everywhere I go..

Most of the stevia I have seen is in liquid form....just a drop or two goes a long way.

I don't think it does well when heated (cooked with).

Stevia is an all natural plant fiber. I've only used the packets. Its ok for light consumption like maybe on grainy cereal. It still has a bitter after taste thing going on.
