Insulin Spike Post W/O

Hey guys and gals,

I am currently looking into getting something like maltodextrin to start taking with a protein shake post-workout, but until I am able to get some, I was wondering if anyone can recommend some CLEAN high GI foods, to promote an insulin spike and get nutrients into my muscles quickly? Thanks.

Dextrose.

Try pharmacies or supermarkets.

yeah, it's dirt cheap. Prolly cheaper than table sugar.

I get half a kilo for £1.50 over here - that's about $2.13 or so.

If you're looking for a post workout source of glucose polymers and you're in a pinch- try candies like Smarties, Sweetarts and Bottlecaps. Quite tasty, cheaper than formulated GPs (Ultra Fuel, etc) and they contain 100% maltodextrin and/or dextrose.

If you're into that sort of thing (insulin).

Oh, and Hi DP! How's it hanging?

Hey Yo, MB....Glad you made it over here!

Welcome!

Heard you made it to 7% BF...Congradulations!
(I saw your BW too)....

Now pick up some slack!

Thanks, mama's boy, that's actually what I was looking for, some clean or fairly clean food to use in place of maltodextrin or dextrose until i could get some. Also, does anyone have a preference as to which is better, dextrose or maltodextrin?

you want to get both. use a 50/50 mixture as to much dextrose can cause a negative-sided insulin spike. the maltodextrin is metabolized a fraction slower than the dextrose, which is why you want to use both...

Actually, they both sike the shit out of insulin, so it doesn;t matter in that regard.

The reason for the mix is cause the carbs enter the muscle cells via active transport - since there's a limited number of carrier channel proteins there's a limited amount of carbohydrate that can enter the cell. The dextrose gets digested and absorbed first and thus enters the cell no problem - the malto, however, is a glucose polymer and so needs to be broken down into the glucose (dextrose) in order to pass through the gut wall and get to the cell, by which time, (hopefully) most if not all the dextrose will be in the cells and the 'new' glucose can enter no problem.

What about an insulin spike while cutting but only after working out? I realize that during a cut you want to minimize any insulin activity, but if you only did it after a workout would it adversely affect cutting, especially if you had a meal an hour or so later with fat, protein, and low GI carbs, to bring insulin activity back down?

I chose to have one huge insulin spike during the day when cutting.
This time being post workout.
Your body will not store fat from an insulin spike after a hardcore workout if you are sticking to a very clean cutting diet for the rest of the day.

Oh
And I keep my carbs really low during the day
(only green veggies)
and consume some
carbs before my workout as well as after.
(Need the energy Ya know)

I've been doing this while cutting for 8 weeks and i've not noticed a slow down of FAT (Leah ) loss.

My training is also kick ass, in fact, you wouldn't realise i was in calorie deficit.

Just make sure your fat in take is as low as possible when you're spiking your insulin (save for any CLA supplementation, if you so desire).

Awesome, thanks TCD and Chest.

I figured as much, just wanted to make sure, and yeah, I definitely don't have fat while spiking insulin, except for CLA, good to know there's nothing, or little, to worry about.

Who know an actual link to buy dextrose in bulk

Posted by: physicallyelite

Below is a link to a homebrew company I found only that sells dextrose.

Honey is another great high GI carb to use post-workout.

Thank you gentlemen!!!!

Posted by: Power Rabbit

I just use powdered gatorade...it comes in a huge tub and one of the main ingrediants is dextrose...

Posted by: firestorm

Now there is a thought PR. An excellent thought. Where did you buy it in a powder form?

Posted by: kvyd

can someone tell me the purpose of a insulin spike post workout?

Posted by: sara

Bread/Rice and potatoes are better than sugar
Or a protein bar.. if they very low in fat

Posted by: firestorm

hahaha Sara.... Yes those are better then sugar but they won't go well in a blender with Creatine. Dextrose is the best transportation system for Creatine Monohydrate hence all the talk about this form of sugar.

The insulin spike will drive proteins into the damaged tissue (muslces) to create anabolism.

Posted by: nikegurl

my ex also used the powder gatorade and liked that post workout (added to creatine) b/c it contained dextrose as sweetener/

they have it at most grocery stores and target carries it too (if you live near one). usually cheaper at target.

Posted by: firestorm

Thanks NG. I do live pretty close to a Target. I'll check it out thanks again.
