Duncan,

With all due respect, I don't think you addressed my questions. So, I will ask again in a seperate thread:

What do you consider a more effective diet to lose bodyfat? (are you saying *any* diet in which calories are reduced is more effective and/or easier to follow)

And, how can you call the nature of the human metabolism worthless?

Certainly no rush.... I just posted in the incredibly long "NY Times-Atkins" thread with hopes of getting a response from Duncan or TCD. I got a response from Duncan- it just didn't directly address either of my questions.

Anyone else feel free to comment or give thoughts on the above questions as well.

In the vast majority of people, a ketogenic diet will be the most effective way to lose fat quickly, in my opinion. The problem is coming off of the diet incorrectly can cause you to gain the weight back. The correct way to come off of those diets is to slowly introduce low GI carbs back into the diet so that you do not put the weight back on and to up the cardio to prevent excess fat accumulation. You want foods with a low insulin response at first and then you can add medium GI foods. Although insulin response is not directly correlated with glycemic response, it is the only thing we have to go by since the insulin index is known for only like 20 foods.

Having said all of this, I believe you should do a cyclical ketogenic diet like the anabolic diet where you eat little to no carbs all week and then carb up on the weekend or for just one day. That way, the shock will be less when you come off. Oh and do not worry if you are in ketosis, it really does not matter.

PS-Coincidentally, I dropped about 30 lbs in 2 months on a CKD (Cyclical keto diet)

The second most important thing is a calorie deficit.

The most important thing is using a diet that you can stick to.

Without these you're doomed to fail without starting.

Good day, Sir.

Duncan and TCD,

Thanks for the replies! Turns out none of us thinks ketosis dieting is worthless. In fact, we agree it is quite effective, especially CKDs! I agree, that cyclical is the way to go, not straight keto. Also, we agree that caloric defecit is important for any kind of fat loss as well (duh).

Sorry if I came off as a jerk.

Duncan,

Congrats on your fat loss, by the way. I'm currently at 7% BF, on a CKD-style effort to get down to 5%. I've probably lost more fat than anyone on this board... and I think CKDs rule!

However, they are clearly effective because of the 4-5 days in ketosis (or at least near it). The weekend carb binging does little in the way of fat loss (duh). Prolonged periods of the same exact ketogenic diet (such as Atkins) are still just as effective for fat loss (assuming you limit calories)... but are muscle suicide for active weightlifters & high intensity athletes. The carb load also helps leptin levels and makes it easier to stay on the diet for an extended period of time.

In other words, you need some carbs to lift weights. But not a ton... and not all day every day. Thus, the CKD rules for fat loss!
