Question about tomatoes

I'm wondering why tomatoes aren't considered to be the best of food choices on a cut. They're low GI, not that high in carbs, lots of nutrients. If you compare, say, a pound of tomatoes with 21g of carbs, then subtract 5 for fiber, to a pound of broccoli with 24g minus 13 for fiber, they're not THAT different. Does the fact that tomatoes are technically a fruit have something to do with it?

Hi GardenGirl!
I believe Tomatoes are high in sugar(like fruit).

So what? The sugar in the fruit is good for you!

Posted by: Leslie2196

Well Cenox, if you are trying to cut or lose body fat, then the sugar in tomatoes is NOT good for you.
Have you ever picked up a jar of spaghetti sauce? One 1/2 cup serving has 10g sugar...almost as much as sugary cereal.

When cutting all fruit should be avoided with the exception of a few like strawberries, ect due to theie compostition.

Leslie keep in mind that spaghetti sauce has added sugar, I believe a 1/2 c of tomatoes has about 4g of carbs.

You could replace an apple with a tomato in some cutting programs, usually closer to a competition you would take away both! They are not horrible!

Where is my head today!! You are right Seyonne...Guess I am thinking about pasta too much

Plus it contains lycopene, which is one of the best antioxidants out there. Also linked to preventing many forms of cancer.

Good answer, DP! Well, at least one I wanted to hear. That makes sense to me, since they have about the same carb count as an apple or strawberries - Seyone is right about the carb count, as well as the fact that most tomato sauces have mucho sugar added.

Thanks for the input, everyone! Does anyone know where to find a list of the actual amount of sugar found in certain natural foods? I found lists for carbs and GI, but not sugar counts. I'm presuming that since tomatoes have the same carb counts as certain other green leafy veggies, like brussel sprouts or cabbage, that the reason one shouldn't eat tomatoes like veggies is because of the sugar content?

Hey Leslie, if you're near Chicago, I can pass along some tomatoes once my crop starts coming in. You can toss them with the pasta you....umm.........can't have I guess.

Err, never mind. Fresh tomatoes anyone?

Hmm, okay, this is interesting. I found this list of fruits and how much sugar there is in a 100g portion:

http://www.thefruitpages.com/contents.shtml

According to this chart, tomatoes have almost no sugar. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
