Giants batter Rams, 44-12, to win 12th straight away from Giants Stadium

The Rams looked like Baboons.

ST. LOUIS - There were no frayed nerves on the Giants' sideline when the St. Louis Rams pulled within a touchdown with less than 11 minutes to play. The Rams had momentum. Their sparse crowd was in a frenzy.

But by now, these Giants know better than to worry about all that.

Instead, they went out and did what they felt they should've been doing all game: They dominated their inferior opponent. The defending champions finished off the game with a flourish, scoring 21 points in the final 7:18 as they blew the woeful Rams out of the Edward Jones Dome, 41-13.

"Our word was 'persistence,'" Tom Coughlin said. "We knew we'd have to keep battling and battling and then take advantage of our opportunities."

"That's the mark of a champion," added defensive end Justin Tuck. "Lucky for us, we were able to impose our will in the fourth quarter."

Luck seemed to have little to do with the Giants' most complete and dominant performance in several years, and their biggest blowout on the road since they won 35-7 at Detroit on Oct. 27, 1996. In winning their 12th straight away from home, they outgained the Rams 441 yards to 201. In fact, the entire Rams team didn't have as many yards as the Giants' three-headed "Earth, Wind and Fire" backfield. Running backs Brandon Jacobs (15 carries, 93 yards), Derrick Ward (8-58), and Ahmad Bradshaw (5-52, two touchdowns) combined for 203.

And Bradshaw (nickname: "Fire"), who didn't even get a single carry in the opener, helped put this game away in the fourth. He did all his damage in the final 11 minutes, including touchdowns of 18 yards and 31 yards, sandwiched around Tuck's 41-yard interception return for a score.

"Ahmad came off the sideline in the fourth and guys' legs were tired (on defense)," Jacobs (or "Earth") said. "He comes in and they say, 'Who the hell is this quick guy that's coming in here?' It kind of reminded me of the playoffs last year."

And as in the playoffs last year, the Giants got a terrific and efficient performance from Eli Manning, who completed 20 of 29 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns, without an interception. And the defense kept the pressure on Rams QB Mark Bulger all game, sacking him six times, including twice each by Fred Robbins and Tuck.

And yet, the game was maddeningly close. The only touchdown the Giants (2-0) got in the first half was a 33-yard pass from Manning to Plaxico Burress (5-81), and thanks to two 54-yard field goals by Rams kicker Josh Brown, the Giants had only a 13-6 lead at halftime.

On the Giants' first drive of the second half, they were pinned at their own 3. But Manning directed a 97-yard march that featured a 30-yard run by Jacobs and ended with a 10-yard TD pass to Amani Toomer (6-67).

"That was a well-, well-executed drive," Coughlin said. "We needed something like that at that time so we would know we'd be okay in the second half."

They were okay, but it was still only 20-6 with 10:46 left in the game when Bulger (20-for-32, 177 yards) threw up a 45-yard prayer toward Torry Holt in the end zone that was nearly intercepted by Giants rookie safety Kenny Phillips. In fact, Phillips is pretty sure it was intercepted - he deflected the ball, watched it bounce off Holt's arm as the two hit the ground and, he said, pulled it close to his chest. But Holt apparently pulled it away and rolled over before the officials arrived. When they got there, Holt had the ball and they signaled a touchdown, and suddenly the Rams (0-2) were only down 20-13.

All that did, though, was wake the Giants up. Manning quickly took them 82 yards and hit Bradshaw for an 18-yard touchdown. Six plays later, Tuck shed his block, jumped at the line of scrimmage to bat down a pass, but ended up with the ball in his arms, and he jogged 41 yards to the end zone to put the Giants up 34-13. Then Bradshaw struck again from 31 yards out with 3:23 to go.

In the end, the Giants had an answer for everything the Rams did - and more. "Our mind never wavers," Burress said. "We say to ourselves, 'Let's go get a touchdown.' And we went down and answered the bell when we needed to."

It's what they did during their championship run last winter. It's what they plan on doing the rest of this year, too.

"If we can keep this up and keep playing well," Jacobs said, "it's going to be tough for anybody to beat us."

'Earth, Wind and Fire' backfield leads Giants with power
Quote:
ST. LOUIS - They didn't have a single 100-yard rusher among them, and none of them got more than 15 carries the entire game.
But the Giants' newly nicknamed "Earth, Wind and Fire" backfield didn't care about that. All that mattered to them was the result.
"Did you see the score?" said running back Derrick (Wind) Ward, who came up with the nickname. "As long as we keep getting those scores and those yards, there's no telling what we can do."

There was no stopping any of the elements Sunday, as the Giants' three-headed running back monster ran all over the St. Louis Rams for 203 yards in the 41-13 win. Brandon (Earth) Jacobs led the way with 15 carries for 93 yards. Ward contributed 58 yards on eight carries. And Ahmad (Fire) Bradshaw closed things out with five carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
"I'm very glad I've got those guys on my team," said defensive end Justin Tuck. "It's the best of all three worlds."

Unbeaten Giants unmatched so far, stay perfect......
....4-0 and no asterisk.
Sunday, October 5th 2008, 10:55 PM

Not much has changed for the Giants since they walked off the field in Phoenix in February after one of the biggest upsets in NFL history. They are still the best team in football.

Even though they were Plax-less, the Giants humiliated and dominated the four-time defending NFC West champion Seahawks Sunday by the absurd score of 44-6, their most lopsided regular-season victory since 1972. They are not going to go undefeated this season but right now they look unbeatable, especially with the way Eli Manning is playing.

The Giants are talented, resilient and still hungry, despite those large rocks on their fingers. They are motivated to show they're not one-month wonders who got hot at the right time. They are determined not to be remembered as the team that prevented the Patriots from completing a perfect season and then disappeared.

Including their four-game playoff run and their first 4-0 start since 1990 - when they started 10-0 and won the Super Bowl - the Giants have won eight in a row. "We won a lot of games in a row last year," Amani Toomer said. "We're a good team. Nobody wants to give us credit for it. But I think we're pretty good."

It won't get much better than Sunday. The Seahawks arrived here Friday night after practicing in Seattle. They played like they were jetlagged with their body time stuck at 10 a.m. for the 1 p.m. kickoff. But they would have had no chance against the Giants under any circumstances. The Giants outgained them 523-187 and Seattle never got inside the Giants' 10-yard line.

Considering the price of gas, Seahawks owner Paul Allen shouldn't have even wasted any of his considerable fortune on fueling up the team charter flight.

The Seahawks were awful. But the Giants are very good.

Antonio Pierce continues to get significant mileage out of the no-respect approach. "We're one of the top five-to-10 teams in the league," he said. "There are other guys with better special teams, better name players, better coaches. A lot of things. We're just one of the teams that luckily got to 4-0. A fluke."

Of course, he was smiling.
Sadly Peppers wasn't smiling.

But one-quarter of the way through their season, the Giants are the NFL's best team. The Patriots dropped out the moment Tom Brady went down in the opener. The Cowboys give up too many points. The 5-0 Titans are a nice story with Kerry Collins, but they will be fortunate to win the AFC South. The Redskins just won in Dallas and Philly back-to-back and got through the toughest part of the schedule at 4-1. But they lost to the Giants in the opener, although they have a big advantage now that they are now done with NFC East road games.

The Giants may not have another game like they did against Seattle, which was ready to head home after Manning hit Domenik Hixon with a 32-yard touchdown less than four minutes into the game.

Hixon was subbing for Plaxico Burress, who was serving his one-game suspension for failing to show up for work Sept. 22. He looked just as good as Burress, catching four passes for 102 yards before suffering a concussion with three minutes left in the first half. He was done for the day, but then Sinorice Moss came in and caught the first two touchdown passes of his career.

It's a good thing Burress signed his new contract before the season and is not in the middle of negotiating it now. He would have no leverage, not after his suspension and Manning completing 15 passes to five different wide receivers Sunday.

"We felt very confident with the guys we had out there," Manning said.

As long as Manning is throwing like this, it almost doesn't matter who is on the other end. This is the Giants' best start in a post-Super Bowl year. In 1987 and 2001 they lost their first game and in 1991 they won their first and lost their second. Just last year, the Colts, coming off their Super Bowl, opened 7-0 before losing to the undefeated Patriots. The 2004 Patriots started 6-0 on their way to defending their title.

All the Giants have done so far is show they are not going away so fast. "We knew it wasn't a fluke," Justin Tuck said. "We knew what kind of team we have here and we just want to continue to build on this."

They play the Browns in Cleveland next Monday night, then are home against the 49ers. It's imperative they come out of this soft spot in the schedule at 6-0 before this stretch: at Pittsburgh, home to Dallas, at Philadelphia.

Pierce is more concerned about going undefeated in the NFC East than undefeated for the season. And he doesn't care if anybody thinks what happened last year was a fluke.

"I know where my hardware sits," he said. "There are a lot of teams that wish they could have fluked last year and had some hardware. They don't donate jewelry. You've got to earn it."

One month into the season, the Giants are the best team in the league. They've earned it. But there are no rings or trophies in October.

Agree. they are the champs till someone dethrones them. Eli is playing now with a whole new sack of confidence, almost as if he reached another speed. Giants are looking good!

Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, who shot self in leg, will talk to cops, DA on Monday

Posted by: IainDaniel

He is a head case.

Wouldn't be surprised if the NFL doesn't hand down a a hefty suspension.

Posted by: min0 lee

The Giants are doing real good without him.

Posted by: IronAddict

A waste of talent! This is the reason the Steelers got rid of him, and they are doing fine! So will the G-men! This is a main reason I am a Steeler fan, no primadonnas!

Plaxico Burress is the reason racism still exists.

Way to go, you nig.

The Giants reportedly constructed Plaxico Burress' $35 million contract extension in such a way that a substantial amount could come off the books if the team cuts ties with him.
The Giants could clear $23 million off their payroll if they cut or trade Burress after the season. Knowing Burress' track record, they were careful not to include too much guaranteed money in the deal, which is proving to be a savvy move.
The Giants are smart.

Mayor Bloomberg fuming over Plaxico shooting: Throw the book at him

BY FRANK LOMBARDI, ALISON GENDAR AND JONATHAN LEMIRE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

Sack 'im!

An irate Mayor Bloomberg Monday demanded that prosecutors throw the book at Giants star Plaxico Burress for bringing a loaded handgun into a crowded midtown nightclub and accidentally shooting himself in the leg.

Bloomberg also slammed New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell and the Giants for not immediately reporting the shooting to police - cops learned of it from TV - and said it would be an "outrage" if Burress got special treatment.

"It's pretty hard to argue the guy didn't have a gun and that it wasn't loaded," Bloomberg said, lashing out at the man who caught the winning touchdown in the 2008 Super Bowl.
"You've got bullet holes in and out to show that it was there."

A Weill Cornell spokeswoman said late last night an employee has been suspended in connection with the case, but she would not name the worker or divulge any details about the sanction.

"Not reporting a gunshot wound [to police] is a clear violation of our policies and procedures," she said.

Burress had a loaded Glock semiautomatic in his waistband at the Latin Quarter nightclub early Saturday when it slipped down his pant leg and went off when he tried to grab it, police said.

New York law requires a minimum of 31/2 years in prison for a conviction of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, the charge Burress faces.

"I don't think that anybody should be exempt from that," Bloomberg said. "It would be an outrage if we don't prosecute to the fullest extent of the law."

Not prosecuting celebrities would make "a sham, a mockery of the law," the mayor asserted.
The mandatory sentencing would not necessarily apply if Burress is offered a plea bargain.

Defense lawyers said prosecutors are loath to cut a deal. "The DAs . . . have been very hard-nosed on this," said veteran criminal defense lawyer Martin Geduldig. "They expect jail time."

Bloomberg also railed against the hospital for failing to immediately report Burress was brought in with a gunshot wound.

"It's a chargeable offense. The district attorney should certainly go after the management of this hospital," the mayor said.

Bleeding and afraid to contact the authorities after the 1:50 a.m. shooting, Burress was helped into teammate Antonio Pierce's black Escalade, police sources said. The group tried to find a hospital that would admit them without calling cops.

At 2:04 a.m., Burress arrived at New York-Presbyterian, checking in under an alias, sources said. Burress told doctors he was shot at an Applebee's.

He was released at 1 p.m. Although Burress spent nearly 11 hours at the hospital, Weill Cornell officials never notified police, as required by law, sources said.

Yes, he should have the book thrown at him. Sports nowadays, as with just about everything else has gotten way out of control. He was just to stupid to realize just how great he had it, all because he could really play a GAME. Can you imagine Broadway Joe, or Jim Brown doing something like that? I wonder what old school players think about these modern day athelets?

Make an example of him, kick him out of the league even though he is pretty good, he's no Jerry Rice! Let him Become a trash man, because that is all he has the intellect for. Let him work a 9-5 like a real person, and realize like the rest of us, that every action, has a reaction!

Back in the day they drank themselves into oblivion. They played the games hungover, maybe took a Bennie or two, cheated on their wives, all for a grand. But never, ever, ever, ever did they walk around with in those days with pistols.
