What kind of car do you drive?

(CLICK HERE here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Leslie

I dunno know why I am starting this thread. But all od David's poll's have got me wondering about everyone! You can tell alot about a person thru the car/caolor they chose.

Now lets all tell the truth- no lying to make yourselves look more appealing!

I will start:
I drive (well I try) a Toyota Sequoia/Silver= BIG CAR-BIG GIRL

Next....

Oh yea I love my truck

Princess, that is exactly the car I would expect you to be in

NT you going to restore it to mint condition

Posted by: naturaltan

Nope ... Craig, I'm going strictly for the hotrod looks. I have a 440 I was going to put in it (it currently has a 318), but with the sudden surge in gas prices, it's not very feasible to make it saily driver if I have to take out a loan every other week to keep it in gas. I plan on rebuidling the 318, repainting it and putting a new box on it. I'd also like to put in an external gas tank ... ahhh, but Mrs.NT has some trips planned, so I'm not sure what the near future looks like for my, opps, my daughter's truck. * When I first bought it, she claimed the passenger side as hers ... and lately she's claimed the entire truck as hers * : )

I just got a 98 Jeep Grand Cheerokee. I got a hell of a deal on it and the thing is fully loaded. I love it. Here is a pic of it. It looks dark grey here, but it changes in the light. Sometimes it looks olive, and sometimes it looks tan.

Well i shouldnt laugh. I hope that you cant tell anything about the person by the car you drive.

Mine is Very big, it is bright orange and yellow, it makes regualr stops, and has many seats. Can you geuss? Yes its the city bus. LOL. Well i acutally dont drive it, so does that count?

I also drive my BF's red Jeep YJ with transformer stickers all over it. All the men love it. I wish it had Barbie stickers on it instead. Its a show off car and we like to show off. It has huge tires and a lift with crome accessories and no bumper.

W8 i am kinda freaked out by your car. I hadent read your post and i some how thought that "if W8's car described her it would be a tracker". You are well built yet sleak and beautiful with a great interior.

I... I mean the wife has a RAV and we love it. We test drove just about every mid size SUV we could find and the RAV won hands down. Drives more like a sports car than a SUV.

1990 Ford Thunderbird with almost 150,000 miles, V6. yeah, you're all laughing at me. However, my logic is this. every 6-12 months or so, i buy a car for around $1,000 - $1,500, and I drive it into the ground. Sometimes they last a few months, sometimes they go over a year (my '88 accord went 2 years) I do the basic maintenence and thats it. Car payments suck, and paying for repairs on a car that you're still paying off sucks worse!

I also have a Nissan Sentra. 1997, dark grey four door. I really like it. Of course, I hope to get a newer, bigger car maybe next year...but probably a Altima or Camry. Never been one to care about cars too much. As long as I can get from point A to point B safely and economically..and that I can afford it of course!

NT - really dig your street rod truck. You don't see many Fargos.

Mudge - got any pictures of that 94 Camaro? That's some serious HP. What are some of the details? I assume this is a small block. Is that number on the juice or any other power adder?

Me, I drive a Chevy 4x4 (black). It's descked out a little bit and has a Flowmaster exhaust. (you hear me coming). On sunny days during the weekends I drive a 68 Camaro SS. It's a 350, four speed car (numbers matching). Also building a second 68 Camaro that will be a Pro Touring car (406 SB with a 700R4). It should be ready next summer.

I saw someone mention a 70 Monte. Anyone else here into the streetrod or muscle car scene?

Since highschool I've slowly given up all hobbies and sports to devote more time to restoring cars. My wife calls it an obsession.

robbm I have a 30 ford pickup with a "boss 302". Blue body, with black running boards.

my dad has a 28 pick up roadster with a chrysler hemi!

Glad to hear some else is into the rodding scene!

Nt thats a sweet looking ride, go for the 440, speaking from experience you'll probably spend as much on the 318 trying to squeeze out every last horse, as you would on the 440.

Posted by: Mudge

Rob, http://docmudge.tripod.com/dynorun030902/index.html is my dyno sheet. Its a 94, heads/cam/shorty headers/yada yada car, all naturally aspirated (safer, cheaper).

Had the heads done by a friend back easy who does work for big-name Trans Am etc racers, good price, and low lift flow blows away stuff costing much more, so the car was not just top end, I could take off from second gear with no problem, stock rear 3.42 gears.

If I had long tube headers on the car, it should have hit 520 crank HP, I was around 485/490, but I live in CA so wanted to keep the headers legal just incase, plus long tubes have poor ground clearance.

Here is a pic of me napping in the car, at www.thunderhill.com which is one of the tracks I visit, with some other guys - www.ncracing.org

Ahh, and yes its a 5.7L, no stroker here (budget).

My plan is to sell this beast, and start a 67/68 Camaro project. I had a 69 Firebird and miss it, the first gen is the car of my dreams. I guess you could call what I want to do pro-tour, more of a road racer though, so a 6 speed and probably an LT1 - because the computer has an easy/cheap EEPROM to work with, readily available, decent power, etc Definately tempting to go EFI 400+ SBC though. LT1 can be taken to 421 (without relocating the bores), but it starts getting damn expensive, and honestly a 383/396 LT1 could put out 500 RWHP NA with a good solid roller cam, and still be streetable, which would still be tough to keep straight on the road. 17x11 for the rear probably, but I dont know how I could squeeze those on the front - although they do fit on my current car, all the way around, no tubs

Thats my dream, I like this car, but I love 67/68.

Posted by: robbm

Mudge
Damn you LT1/LS1 guys are hard to keep up with!! Those motors are sooo willing to make serious HP!! My ultimate plans for my pro touring car would be an EFI LS1 and T-56. But here in eastern Canada the guys at the salvage yards just giggle when you inquire if they ever have any late model Camaro stuff come in. Let me know if you get a first gen car in the future.

Shooter
Sorry no pics (need to get a digital camera). It's a basic SS car with all the proper badging. Red in color (there's a million red camaros I know, but that's the correct color). Stock rally wheels and a 4 speed Muncie. Cars not perfect, but pretty good. Someday I would love to have a Hemi anything , but it will probably never happen.

Keep the dirty side down everyone

Posted by: Mudge

There is a guy with an LS1 going to go into a 68, a guy who was one of the early LT1 in a first gen cars, 6 speed and all. His plans were to go with a twin turbo setup.

If I were spanking rich I'd consider an LS1 or something other than an LT1, but the LT1 comes with a good computer system, easily editable (no DFI, FAST etc needed!), and even with stock ported heads has good potential. The LS1 has a different firing order, better intake manifold, but damn those heads are just nasty ridiculous. The guy that did my heads didn't do any welding on them, just gutted em, and got peak flow numbers around 278 CFM @ .600 lift, but some LS1s that he has worked on get up into the 340 CFM area, without fancy re-welding the runners!

As a comparison, my cam a 234/246 to make the power I did, the LS1s have been doing the same RWHP numbers with 222/230 cams, both hydraulic rollers. Of course there is plenty of jealousy to go around, but the cost difference between the two setups is a bit prohibitive

I am very, very sure that I will get a first gen, the question is when. I may leave the engine/trans alone for awhile while updating the suspension, the first thing to go is the control arms in front, those things steer WORSE than moder day dually trucks. www.camaroZ28.com was my home before lounging around on this board, I have over 7500 posts

Posted by: scarecrow

My current ride a 2002 VW Jetta GLS 1.8 Turbo, 178hp. I love it!! White, black leather interior, 17 inch wheels, sport suspension. Sticker was like $27,000. This car hauls butt!!!

My baby.. sold to pay for lawyer costs.
1992 Mustang 5.0, org auto converted to 5 speed with 4.10 gears, bolt on this and thats... really load!! Miss it

have also owned.. 3 69 Road unners, a 70 Cuda, 3 Challengers, 66 Chevelle, 74 Camaro 350/4 speed, and so on.

NT go with the 440. The 318 isn't going to make that much difference in gas mileage unless you go with a newer Magnum motor and nclude the fuel injection. Even then you are still talking about 15mpg at the most.

Good god! You got rid of an old 5.0 for a nearly 30k mini-car? ouch...

I had great handling (koni doubles, etc etc), and nearly 500 HP for much less than 27k

Posted by: mesomorphin'

Ever hear that Adam Sandler song, "Piece of Shit Car"? OK, that's mine.

I didn't plan on getting rid of it, just had to pay for my divorce lawyer.... blah!!

But there were a few other things to consider.. that little kid in my signature needed some comfort.. air conditioning!!! I had Eibach drag suspension with Lakewood drag shocks so the ride wasn't exactly great, and I was spending nearly $350 a month in gas.

I'm thinking about opening a shop soon. A custom street/strip shop. I've worked on everything from 32 Fords to 8 second drag cars so I know my way around. I'm deciding what would be a great rollingg "advertisement" and as of now I'm leaning towards a 65 Falcon/Futura with a 5.0 5 speed upgrade, inculding the FI and will also toss in the late Mustand front and rear suspension. Could be interesting

Posted by: Mudge

32 Fords, those are the open wheeled roadsters right? (not the old 1927 t buckets but the "high boy"?), if I know what your talkin I love those things, although open wheel I think is technically illegal in CA

I know of only one 8 second guy, its a V8 (duttweiler) turbo Buick GN, Chris Chow, I believe its 1680 HP (not able to run on most dynos LoL), it was formerly a V6 9 low 9 second, with no back half work done.

If I could have one Ford, it would be a GT-40, not practical of course, but it gives me a woody.

My dream rig is a 68 Camaro though with updated suspension parts (handling baby!) and hoping for around 450 RWHP, which is still more than I know how to drive at speed on a track, stoopid to the max

Posted by: Pitboss

You have 32 Roadsters.. and then you have 3 wiondow coupes, 5 window coupes, sedans and sedan deliveries.

My dream ride... 32 Ford 3 window coupe, chopped, channelled and sporting a 426 Hemi with a 6-71 blower!! No fenders and some big meats!!

In Calif it is legal to run without fenders as long as the vehicle is under a certain weight.

Posted by: Mudge

Ahh, I rememeber a certain chop topped 32 Ford with meats n skinnies, open front, 2 seater - oh well it was cool whatever it was!

Ahh, didn't know about the weight thing, hmm. As long as I can get ~3000 pounds I think I'd be happy, although 2800ish would be nice, just dont know how cost effective that'll be, we shall see.

Posted by: CLPgold

I drive a very economical, family 4dr. Hyndai Elantra '97. It's silver and really a beautiful car. I've kept very good care of it and it's classy looking, and kinda sporty too. I love that car. It goes to the eldest daughter in less than 2 years on her 16th birthday. I'm upgrading to a Honda Odyssey I hope LOL. Always gotta keep the burgeoning family in mind when it comes to vehicle purchases.

Posted by: Neil

I have a 73 Camaro that I have put lots of time and money into. It has a built (by me) small block with 3 in. exaust and all around disc brakes. Next on the list are some good aluminum heads.

Posted by: Mudge

My beater is an 88 Pontiac Le Mans, something like 72 HP and 90 TQ, 32 MPG average, 4 speed manual, its been die hard and absolutely loyal for the 5 months or so that I've owned it, course I'd like something with more getup

Dream beater probably a 73 or previous 280Z with a V8 and a 6 speed, or a Fiero with a larger V6 and maybe a power adder

Posted by: ALBOB

Originally posted by Pitboss My dream ride... 32 Ford 3 window coupe, chopped, channelled and sporting a 426 Hemi with a 6-71 blower!! No fenders and some big meats!!
Now that you've stuck the knife in my heart why don't you just twist it around some? You want to put a Mopar motor in a Ford??? Why don't you just go ahead and drop a Chevy 350 in there? That way you can go to the 7-11 and buy a Big Gulp and a cam shaft. It's a freakin' Ford!!! You want power? Shoe horn a 428 Cobra Jet in that puppy!!!

Posted by: Mudge

Nothing wrong with a Chevy 350 That and a nice 6 speed are my plans for a 67/8 Camaro.

Posted by: ALBOB

I agree, in a 67/8 Camaro a 350 is awesome, but in a '32 Ford??? That's just WRONG!!!

Posted by: Mudge

Hmm, well yes and no - I'm not that much of a purist (there is a CART driver with a twin turbo Toyota V8 in a 67 Camaro, how is THAT for WRONG!). Chevy is such a generic standard, they stick that thing in everything, Porsches included

The one thing superior in my mind is the sound of the Ford firing order, and of course the non-siamesed cylinders but eh... The LS1 fixed that but its too much $ for me.

Posted by: shooter

up here we call a hotrod without fenders either a highboy, cause you can see the body sitting on the frame, or a low boy, if the body is dropped down over the frame.

Posted by: shooter

Oh and I agree with pitboss, I'd put a hemi in anything!

Posted by: Mudge

A hemi is best blown, NA they were not that special.

Posted by: ALBOB

I guess I need to get off my high horse a bit and explain. If you want an easily accomplished swap and inexpensive horsepower you just can't beat a Chevy 350, in ANYTHING. Now, as far as hemi's are concerned, I think the engine is too special to put in anything but a Chrysler, preferably a Charger or Challenger. The same goes for Pitboss' Ford, the car is too special to put anything but a monster Ford into. I wouldn't go with anything less than a built 351 but, like I said, to make it truely special you have to go with a 428 Cobra Jet. Yep, it costs more $$$ to make more power in a Ford but we're talking fantasy cars here, price should not be a consideration.

Now you are making sense

Posted by: kuso

My first ever car was a Charger ( though Australian version, very different from the US one ) !!!

Posted by: Mudge

I used to dig those, but they are a bit heavy, and again the more expensive parts

My understanding is the hemispherical chambers hurt flame propogation in an all out NA car, I believe to help get around this the race Hemis have 2 plugs per cylinder.

Dream cars, hmm, too big a list! Not too much into historical vehicles because I'd want to thrash them to death, so I'll wait for that when I'm an old geezer.

If I had the dough for a replicar project, the GT-40 is the first car that comes to mind. If I did something more modern like a Diablo etc then I'd probably want a turbo or NA Jag V12, so that it at least sort of sounds like one

Posted by: ALBOB

For off the shelf cars I agree with you, there's too many dream cars to list. For a custom I'm stuck on the '50 Merc. I know it's been done a thousand times in a thousand ways but I just can't get over that big ole' beast with the smooth lines. I did see one car recently that could change my mind, a '40 LeSale. Same fat fenders and smooth lines but a more distinctive front end. Either way I'd be in heaven.

I drive an Aussie Ford Falcon!!!!!!! Not what I wanted but what was useful with 3 kids!!!!! My car, when I have the cash and not the kids to worry about would be a Monaro Coupe....Aussie style!!!! Low to the ground.....all V8....all style!!!!! And if its anything like the old Monaro.....plenty of room in the back seat!!!!!

Peugeot 206 2002 Aluminium grey.
Not quite the same as the rally version motorwise, but it still kicks ass as far as I'm concerned. hehehe

Well Albob, your an older dude, for me other than an old 2 seater Ford, the only "hot rod" I'd want would be a 57 Chevy, still a bit big for my britches (I like smaller-lighter road race friendly cars). Hot rods are cool, but more of a muscle car guy here.

MINE IS NOT MUCH TO BRAG ABOUT CAUSE I DRIVE A GREEN METALIC SPIDER MODEL 2000. ITS A COMFORTABLE CAR BUT IT ONLY FEELS GOOD WHEN I DRIVE IT ALONE.

Dark grey Durango

Where I used to live the Durango across the street sounded a little mean, probably an aftermarket muffler (was louder than stock) but I swear the cam sounded lumpy.

Thanks PB ... we'll have to see what the wife has planned for trips, rings, houses ... all those other unnecessary things!

NT - really dig your street rod truck. You don't see many Fargos.
Yeah ... I've only seen a few Fargos roaming these parts ... and not many that have taken the time to redo them properly - can't wait to get mine to the way I want it.

If you mean 60s/70s pretty much anything you want that isn't restored or historical (matching numbers ultra rare yada yada). You could buy a project car for ~$1500+ if you wait and watch, thats my plan for a 68 Camaro. One not too beat up/rusted out, and modernize it brakes/front suspension/engine/trans/wheels-tires etc

How much would a hemi engine cost?

Do u guys think I could get a GTO or SS chevelle that is descent and could get me for point A to point B and also if I wanted to drag race people on the strip for cash?

Posted by: Mudge

Mopar costs more in general, a Hemi though? Thats probably like trying to locate a ZL1 engine, a bit easier but damn, f' that cost I say.

I'm a budget HP kind of person, no 10k engines for me, Hemi is more name than anything else in my book. If you wanted to make serious power there are cheaper routes.

Gee thanks. I'm still with you on the smaller muscle cars but I lump those into the hundreds of factory dream cars I'd love to own. Pretty much any Mustang that's older than 1971 (Understanding it HAS to have a big block), a 427 AC Cobra, a Jaguar XKE, a hopped up AMC AMX or Javeline (just for the uniqueness of them) and the list goes on.
