Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- The San Francisco Giants signed five- time Cy Young winner Randy Johnson to a one-year contract, adding to a rotation that already boasted two holders of Major League Baseball’s premier pitching honor.
Terms of the agreement with the free-agent lefthander, who is five victories shy of becoming the 24th pitcher to reach 300 wins, weren’t disclosed by Brian Sabean, senior vice president and general manager of the team.
Johnson, 45, a 10-time All-Star, has 4,789 strikeouts during his career, the most among lefthanders and second in MLB history to Nolan Ryan’s 5,714.
“Randy continues to be one of the most intimidating and competitive pitchers in baseball,” Sabean said in a statement on the team’s Web site. “He commands respect and will have a dramatic influence on the way the 2009 team conducts business.”
The 21-year veteran, 295-160 with a career 3.26 earned-run average, has pitched two no-hitters, 100 complete games and 37 shutouts in 596 outings for Montreal, Seattle, Houston, Arizona and the New York Yankees.
Johnson joins a Giants a rotation that includes Cy Young Awardees Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito.
