With Tom Brady's recovery taking longer than anticipated and threatening to shut him down for 2009 as well, the New England Patriots suddenly have a stronger concern with their QB position going into next season.

They have been considering their options for a while, but with their season finally over, now is the time when they need to really face the situation and figure out who will be under center at the beginning of next season, and how they will afford to pay that individual, depending on who it is.

Matt Cassel has looked great in his first season as a starter, finishing in the top 10 in the NFL in a variety of passing statistics and leading the Patriots to an 11-5 record after Tom Brady injured his knee in the first quarter of the first game. Cassel was 10th in the NFL in QB rating (89.4), 8th in passing yards (3693), 10th in TD passes (21), 9th in completions (327) and 11th in completion percentage (63.4). He did this all with some of the worst pass protection in football, as the Patriots offensive line gave up the 2nd most sacks in football, with 47. Only the Steelers allowed their quarterbacks to be sacked more times, as Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 46 times, and Byron Leftwich was sacked 3 times.

Cassel would be guaranteed $14 million dollars next year if franchised.

That's a lot of dough for a back-up.

For one year though, it might be their best option. He knows the system and he's proven he can play. Would you rather they bring in someone new to save money?

They can franchise him, retaining his rights for the average of the highest five salaries at his position.

In this case, Cassel would earn $14 million dollars if the Patriots were to franchise him.

I wonder if Belichick believes he can mold either Kevin O'Connell or Matt Gutierrez into a viable option for the first month of the season before Brady is 100 percent.

I love Cassel, but if they let him go in exchange for signing a guy like Nnamdi Asomugha or acquiring draft picks I'd be all for it.

Not to discredit Cassel, but Belichick is a pure genious and may be able to craft one of the two aforementioned quarterbacks or even a draft pick into the starter for a small portion of the month.
