I was wondering if weight lifting makes the body more compact and make short people appear shorter. that's what i've heard at least.

there's no scientific proof of it, if your doing it with proper form it shouldn't matter. think of it like this, you jump up and down, that puts alot more pressure on you than the weights will. ive been lifting weights since about 7th grade or so and im 6'3 and look it to haha height is all in the genetics!!
