I am expecting a Tough Year for the Jays.

Key Reasons

20% reduction in payroll (death of owner, change in value of Cdn Dollar)

Loss of key pitchers Between AJ jumping ship and injuries.

No significant improvment in the already mediocre batting order. However there was an improvement when Cito took over as manager.

Vernon Wells already has been sidelined a month with a hamstring injury.

Not a lot to look forward to when you are in a division with big spenders like Boston and New York, and when Tampa is the American league Champions, it certainly doesn't leave a lot of hope.

That said..... Jays preseason starts today 1:05 against the Yanks

Yes, but look on the bright side, they all have the same records right now.

Jason Lane:

Posted by: soxmuscle

Played a season in OOTP once where Jason Lane hit 40+ home runs and ended being my clean up hitter.

Was actually the Blue Jays in the league, strangely.

Posted by: IainDaniel

OOTP?

We'll see what happens in the regular season. There has been talks the last few years about the Jays bats, and they proved to be nada.

Rios looked good in the WBC.

Out of the park baseball.

It's a simulation based text style baseball game where you take over the role of general manager.

Years ago, when I was a huge nerd, I was all about these leagues where each team was given to one person and it basically turned in to a fantasy league after that.

Trades, free agent signings, draft and everything inbetween.

Really cool program but I happened to be the Jays and picked up Jason Lane in a similar situation and in one of the future seasons (probably 2009, now that I think about it), Jason Lane had a career year in home runs.

Now that means nothing, but this guy has always had the home run power in the mold of an Adam Dunn or Jack Cust (an all or strike out type) and it wouldn't be terribly shocking to me if he were to come out and surprise at some point.

Good start for the Bats, continuation of the Cito Gaston mentality.

Bullpen should be ok, but outside of Halladay as the Starter, there is some worries

Posted by: IainDaniel

Quick little fact.

The Jays were the only Team to not sign a player to an MLB contract this past offseason.

Posted by: min0 lee

What's up with the Toronto fans? They look as bad as the Boston and New York fans.

Leland took his players off the field because of the debris thrown on the field. This is after a rout....imagine if they were losing the game.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Yeah it was bullshit.

Balls being thrown on the field during play.

Won't happen tonite... lucky if there is 25,000 that show up.

Alcohol sales banned by JaysToronto Blue Jays' beer and alcohol ban targets unruly fans - ESPN
ESPN.com news services

TORONTO -- It was just a coincidence that beer and alcohol sales were banned for Tuesday night's Blue Jays game one night after unruly fans littered the field with baseballs and debris. But some players appreciated the timing.
The Blue Jays' 12-5 win over the Tigers on Monday was delayed nine minutes in the eighth inning when fans threw two baseballs in the direction of Detroit left fielder Josh Anderson and tossed a handful of paper planes and empty beer cups onto the field.
Anderson was pleased to hear alcohol would not be sold Tuesday.
"That's good," he said. "These people can't handle it."

The clubhouses were cleared of booze, too, because the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario suspended the liquor license at Rogers Centre for three dates because of past infractions. The dates had been established before Monday's game.
The panel cited five broken rules at baseball and football games and concerts dating to the Canadian Football League championship game in 2007. The stadium will also be dry on April 21 when Toronto plays Texas, and for a CFL game on Aug. 1.

Both affected baseball games fell on dates when the price of upper deck seats was cut to $4, a promotion called "Messin' With Recession." The ban covers everything from concessions, vendors and restaurants to the beer refrigerators in both locker rooms.
Signs posted Tuesday at stadium entrances listed five reasons for the license suspension: permitting drunkenness, permitting the use of narcotics, selling and serving to apparent minors, failure to request approved identification and permitting illegal liquor on the premises.
Mario Coutinho, vice president for stadium operations and security, said the three dry dates were jointly selected in talks between stadium staff and the alcohol commission.

"We proposed some dates that were suitable to their criteria," Coutinho said. "They came with 'X' number dates of suspension and we suggested some proposed dates based on the events that we've had in the past."
Fans who want to exchange their tickets for the affected dates will be allowed to, subject to availability.
Last season, the Blue Jays halted alcohol sales in the upper deck for three games in May and June after fans brawled in the stands, leading to almost 100 ejections.

On Tuesday, the team increased security by checking bags and patting down fans in a bid to stop alcohol from being smuggled into the stadium.
Tuesday's ban meant little to Tigers manager Jim Leyland.
"That has no bearing on me," Leyland said. "I don't drink beer, particularly not during the game."

Posted by: min0 lee

Security placed pictures around the stadium of this known alcoholic...beware, ...he can get violent.

But they let the kid in, it's not his fault.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Yep the Liquor License was suspended, for previous infractions, not cause of what happened on Monday night.

Last year during one the cheap beer nights, there was a huge brawl that occured in the upper deck.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Interesting note today about today's Starters in which the Jays won

Quote:
the first time since the Draft began in 1965 that two first-round picks debuted against each other on the Major League stage

Posted by: min0 lee

Blues Jays are 3- 1....

Posted by: IainDaniel

um correction 4-1

But I wouldn't count on that holding.

Posted by: IainDaniel

How about them bats.

The Jays finished 51-37 in 2008 after Cito Joined as manager. Batting significantly improved. And seems to be continuing on this year.

Still one of the strongest bullpens in MLB, and a young starting rotation which we don't know what to expect.

But if the jays keep hitting the ball, they will get there fair share of wins.

Posted by: soxmuscle

All I can say about this team is that it's too bad McGowan, Chacin, etc. aren't able to man the back end of the rotation.

Same goes for the O's - they're lack of starting pitching will eventually be their downfall.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Chacin is no longer with the team Hasn't been for a while.

Litsche left the game with a strained elbow last night :0

Posted by: soxmuscle

This is true.

Didn't see that he tagged on with the Phils.

Point still stands: the Jays won't compete this year with their rotation the way it's currently set up.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Nope I don't disagree.

They need to fortify that starting rotation.

Chacin hasn't pitched in a couple of years. I think last year he was with the Nationals.

Chacín finished his 2006 season 9–4 with a 5.05 ERA. [5]. In 2007, Chacín was arrested on Friday, March 16 for driving under the influence in Tampa, Florida. The left-hander was stopped by Tampa Police at 3:43 a.m. ET and booked on the misdemeanor charge. Police reports indicated that Chacín's blood alcohol level measured .150, which is much higher than the legal limit of .08. The pitcher was released on a $500 bond.[6] In 2008, Chacín began the season with Toronto's Single-A affiliate Dunedin Blue Jays. On May 9, 2008, he was designated for assignment, and was eventually sent outright to the minors. He became a free agent at the end of the season and signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals on December 23. After being released by the Nationals, Chacin signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

***

I knew he was with Toronto as recently as the end of last season. I guess he showed no signs of a rebound with Washington and they too cut him.

Unfortunate.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Yep he showed a lot of potential

Posted by: IainDaniel

Have won the first 5 series of the season. Great start with the bats.

Some key loses:

BJ Ryan
Ricky Romero
Jesse Litsch.

All down till at least mid may.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Teacher Shows the Student how it is done.

Halladay vs. Burnett.

Less then 100 pitch complete game performance for Halladay. Awesome stuff.

Posted by: min0 lee

He is the best pitcher in Baseball. Don't tell that to Sox...his pitcher is the best ever.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Wow from a mets fan, who you would think would say Santana is by far the best.

Posted by: min0 lee

Santana is not far behind him at all, my comparison now would be the league he plays in.

The Mets bats fall asleep when Santana is pitching, he could easily be 7-0.

Posted by: min0 lee

This guy is good also but Holliday has been good for a while.

Cool, the Red Sox manage to avoid Roy Halladay this weekend.

What is it? Janssen, Tallet, and Romero?

Team needs to wake those bats back up. I don't see that happening against Wakefield tonight, however he doesn't pitch the greatest here.

Rance Mulliniks is the new Red Sox color guy. I wasn't sure if I should post this in this thread or the Sox thread, but I figured former Blue Jay gays belong here.

That is a major beating to the pitching staff over the last year and bit.

BJ Ryan (Returned earlier this season - Tommy John)
Marcum (Labrum)
McGowan (Labrum)
and now Litsch (Tommy John)

Le sigh.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Major blow to the Jays if true.

But inevitable, cause year in and year out, there is no way in hell the Jays could compete with the Yanks and Bosox.

Ricciardi might consider trading ace Halladay

GM preps Halladay for potential trade

By Buster Olney
ESPN The Magazine

Toronto Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi has spoken with Roy Halladay and prepared him for the possibility that he will bring trade possibilities to the pitcher in the weeks or months ahead.
Halladay, 32, has a no-trade clause that will allow him to dictate whether he will be dealt before he becomes eligible for free agency next fall.
"He's open to at least listening," said Ricciardi. "He's not going to be a guy who will let you do all the work [preparing for a possible trade], and then he's not willing to listen. If it makes sense, he will listen."
The Jays' situation with Halladay is much like that which faced the Minnesota Twins during the 2007 season with ace Johan Santana: The left-hander was set to become eligible for free agency in 2008, and after Santana turned down an offer from Minnesota, the Twins dealt him to the Mets.
"I want to stay, but I think it's a situation you have to evaluate," Halladay said before Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay. "I'm really not at that situation just yet. If something does come up, you weigh your options at that point. I hate to put the cart in front of the horse and start saying 'Do I want to do that?' I think you just evaluate the situations when they come."
Halladay is eligible for free agency after the 2010 season, and so the Jays essentially will have three windows of opportunity in which they could consider dealing the former Cy Young Award winner -- in the 24 days before the July 31 trade deadline; during the offseason; or next season.
"Really at this point, I just want to focus on my job here," Halladay said.
And the Jays have begun the process of casting a line in the water to see what they could get in return for the right-hander, whose work ethic is as highly regarded as his ability.
"We're not inclined to move him, but we're going to see what's out there," said Ricciardi.

If Halladay walks away as a free agent after the 2010 season, the Jays would get the equivalent of two high draft picks as compensation, so that level of value would be a starting point for any interested team. Halladay would fit any team, of course.

Right now, the team most aggressively searching for a front-line starting pitcher is the Philadelphia Phillies, who no doubt would covet Halladay for their particular park for his ability to generate ground balls and missed swings -- he has a ground ball/fly ball ratio of 1.30, to go along 98 strikeouts in 116 innings this season. The question about the Phillies -- as it is with most teams these days, when the value of young players has never been higher -- is whether they would be willing to give up what the Jays would require in trade.

The Boston Red Sox could afford Halladay and know firsthand that he is capable of pitching effectively in the AL East -- something they and the New York Yankees doubted about Jake Peavy -- but Boston has stubbornly clung to its young pitching, and might be reluctant to trade a package of prospects for Halladay. The Yankees have been devoted to the rebuilding of their farm system, and would have to swap some of the young stars they have developed to get Halladay.

Both the Red Sox and Yankees dabbled in the Santana trade talks, but neither front office was fully invested in the pursuit of the left-hander, who was three years younger than Halladay is now.

The New York Mets may or may not have the caliber of prospects that the Jays would require to make the deal; the same could be said for the Chicago Cubs. The Jays would want one of the Dodgers' best young starters for Halladay -- either Clayton Kershaw or Chad Billingsley -- and that figures to be a deal-breaker for L.A.

The Blue Jays began Tuesday at 43-41, seven games back of Boston in the AL East and six out of the wild card -- behind six other teams.
"All I can do is try to avoid that becoming a distraction and go from there," Halladay said. "It's a situation where, I think, if it's best for the team, it's best for me, then it just means you go from there. It's basically just saying this is an option that we have and maybe we'll look at it. I think that's really the extent at this point."

Halladay, who is 10-2 with a 2.79 ERA for the Jays this year, is earning $14.25 million this year, and will make $15.75 million next season.
Ricciardi was vague when asked if salary would be a factor. The Blue Jays' payroll is just short of $81 million, 16th out of 30 big league teams.

"I'm not so sure payroll-wise where we're going to be able to be after 2010. I'm not so sure that the player wants to stay here beyond 2010. I'm not sure of those things," he said. "So those are all things we have to weigh out. He's under contract through next year and worst-case scenario, he does not sign back with us and we get two draft picks."

Interim CEO Paul Beeston declined to comment on dealing Halladay but did say the team's payroll for next season is still a work in progress. The Blue Jays have $82.45 million committed to Halladay and seven others next year.
"We will be getting into it over the next month," Beeston said. "We'll be looking at next year, we'll do a three-year plan and a five-year plan as best we can project it."

The only salary commitments the Blue Jays have between 2011 and 2014 are to Vernon Wells, Alex Rios and Aaron Hill, worth about $40 million per season.
Buster Olney is a senior baseball writer for ESPN The Magazine. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

One problem is that whoever gets him will have to ante up a huge contract extension. He's been one of the best pitchers in MLB the last 5-6 years. If Sabathia can get $160 million, Halladay isn't going to settle for $50 million. I don't think a team is going to give up 4-5 top prospects unless they can lock up Halladay for five years or so.

Posted by: IainDaniel

True. however the Jays can still get some get prospects based on the fact that he still has another year on his contract, and only at $15 mil.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Wow! couldn't even get someone to eat a bit of his contract.

That said Cashman is all proud that he got sabbathia without giving up players like what happened with santana.

He forgets to realize he got the lesser of the two pitchers, and paid 28 million more dollars.

How about CC for Doc straight up?

Sabathia hasn't lived up to expectations and is yet another example of a pitcher who tore up the lighter hitting NL, but finds himself getting torched regularly in the tough AL East. Can you say Carl Pavano and Randy Johnson?

More like a Johnson, Pavano is a homo.

Alex Rios Claimed on Waivers

According to Buster Olney, someone (we don't yet know who) has claimed Alex Rios off revocable waivers. Rios has $60 million remaining on his contract over the next six seasons. That leaves the Jays with three options:As we showed a few weeks ago with Beyond the Boxscore's nifty Trade Value Calculator, while Rios can be frustrating at times, his contract is not at all dead weight. Therefore, my hope would be that if the Jays do move him, they're looking to get value back. I suppose that theoretically they could save money by penciling Snider in to play right field next season, with Lind taking left, Overbay staying at first, and perhaps Dopirak DH-ing, but that's putting a lot of eggs in the basket of two very young hitters. Realistically, if Rios is let go he likely has to be replaced, and if that's done on the free agent market it's doubtful whoever is brought in will be a better value than Alexis, unless the Jays luck into an Abreu 2009-type deal. At the same time, I have gotten the sense this season that the Jays are getting a little frustrated with Rios and they wouldn't mind moving him.
What would y'all do now, if you're the Jays? What do you think they will do?

Posted by: IainDaniel

Official now. Rios was Claimed by the White Sox. He will join the team in Seattle on Tuesday.

Much like Wells?

Wells is worse.

Ever since all this Steroid dilemma really hit the media, his stats have been well below par.

Problem being his salary jumps up to 12 million next year and 23 million the following season and 21 million a season for the remaining 3.

Jays Bullpen is starting to get back to last years status. The best ERA in baseball since July 8th.

Is Vernon Wells Toronto's David Ortiz?

Holy crap, are you kidding me!?

Yeah, I don't know what happened to that guy. He used to absolutely destroy the Red Sox.

Posted by: IainDaniel

I can tell you...

He is rumoured to be on the list of 103. All his injuries other then the broken bone, seem to fall in line with potential steroid use.

Yes his salary is that ridiculous. too bad they couldn't get rid of him on waivers. There has to be another sucker like the White Sox to pick up a chump.

This is one area where the NFL is far superior to MLB. In the NFL, they'd just cut you and rid themselves of such a horrible contract. Pay-for-performance, just like the rest of the world.

Posted by: IainDaniel

I agree.

But the MLBPA has too much of a strong hold to allow that to happen.

No...I am recovering from ACL reconstruction and have been very limited in my outdoor activity.

Posted by: Triple Threat

Weren't you recently out on a bike ride? Speaking of which, how's MBC doing and did she get a new bike?

I've been on a few road rides, which is actually great for rehab. No mountain biking and no running though.

MBC is pretty much healed. She ordered a new bike yesterday. She got fully refunded the price of the old bike from the insurance company, which makes sense since the bike was two miles old. We're waiting to hear from them now on compensatory damages (their idea...we're just happy to get the bike money back).

Blue Jays Suck!

Posted by: IainDaniel

Yes..... Yes they do.

At least they don't pull pussy moves like pretend they are somebody fielding a ball while running the basepaths, or bump into the pitcher after crossing the plate.

I so wish Matt Stairs got to A-rod a couple of years ago, he would have tore him apart.

Posted by: min0 lee

Just kidding.
I saw the what Posada did which was stupid when you think about it, he didn't get hit with the ball.
What happened between A-rod and Stairs?

Posted by: IainDaniel

When A-rod did that fly ball fake call while rounding the bases.

The Next game the Jays threw at him twice. The benches cleared. A-rod stood back in a corner like a pussy, while Stair went stir crazy trying to get at him. Good Canadian boy He would of fucked that pretty boy up

Oh yeah, I remember that.
A-rod is a pretty boy, for a guy his size and Dominican background he is pretty soft.

The last stand - Sportsnet.ca WAP

At the risk of sounding like an insensitive clod, I have absolutely no sympathy for Toronto Blue Jays fans.
True, the Jays are wrapping up a season that will mark the 17th straight year of missing the playoffs. But there's no excuse for the embarrassingly low crowd counts at Rogers Centre in September and as the Jays wrap up their home schedule this weekend, there are plenty of good reasons to head to the ballpark one more time before the snow flies and the Leafs begin to break your heart.

1. Friday night, Jays fans who profess their love for Roy Halladay get the chance to see the Doc operate for (where have we heard this before?) what could be the final time at home in a Jays uniform.
I know, I know...that card was already tossed around like an over-ripe salad at the trade deadline. However, a deal for Doc could go down over the winter and if you miss Halladay's start against the Mariners on Friday, you'll be kicking yourself when he reports for spring training in February wearing Cardinals colours...or Red Sox...or White Sox.
You know the drill.

2. With the Mariners in town, Halladay won't be the only future Hall-of-Famer on the field this weekend.
The Mighty Ichiro brings his magical bat to Toronto having just set a Major League record by chalking up 200 hits for the ninth consecutive season; and he's put up those impressive numbers with a highly unorthodox swing.
"If you were teaching a kid how to hit, you'd never ask them to copy Ichiro," said Rogers Sportsnet analyst Pat Tabler. "But he's got the best hand-eye co-ordination of any hitter you're ever going to see."
Like Halladay, unfortunately, Ichiro has had the misfortune of playing for a mediocre ball club over the years. In fact, the only time he's been to the post-season was during his 2001 rookie campaign.
And how did Ichiro do?
He played 10 games and hit a cool .421; just another routine performance for one of the true legends of the game.

3. There was a time when Blue Jays fans believed that Vernon Wells was on his way to becoming a living legend. Then, he put his name on a certain seven-year, $126 -million dollar contract, and the rest (along with his bat) was history.
But just when you thought you'd have one final opportunity this season to bash V-Dub for his big bucks and small production, he goes on a sudden tear and has been the hottest hitter in the majors since September 6th.
So, with that in mind, be prepared to give Vernon his due when you heckle him this weekend.
"You suck, Wells! Except, of course, when the games are meaningless and we're 30 games out of first place!"

4. While you wonder where Wells has been all season, you can also play a rousing rendition of "Where's Waldo?" during the Jays-Mariners series.
For the purposes of this exercise, we'll call it "Where's the Beest?" as people keep their eyes peeled for Jays interim CEO Paul Beeston.
There is a catch, however.
Beeston, you see, is said to be on vacation.
Geesh!
Even the team’s CEO doesn't want to stick around and watch these guys play.
In Beeston's defence, there are reports that he's finally found someone willing to become the fulltime president and let's hope he's spending some of his holiday time finalizing a deal with the poor sap...uh, make that saviour.
Still, interim boss or not, it's a lousy message to skip town for the final home stand of the year while asking fans to come out and support a club going nowhere.

5. Finally, the best reason of all to head to Rogers Centre this weekend.
With the Jays at home for the final time this year, Toronto fans can at least be thankful that they don't have to watch the Argos.

Meh. We haven't been a legit playoff contender since 1993. That right there is more then enough reason to have the attendance we do.

We were tops in attendance every year until the strike of 1994. We don't like selfish owners, and we don't like selfish players.

Posted by: I Are Baboon

I am going to the Sox/Jays game at Fenway Monday. Either the Sox will clinch a playoff spot that night, or they will have already clinched and it'll be the AAA Red Sox. Either way, I'll be drunk. Pics will follow...

Amazing that it took 25 players 159 games of walking by the manager's office every day before they felt the need to try and improve the situation.
What that means is they lack a team leader, a player who can be the voice of the team.......

Posted by: IainDaniel

I think the mutiny thing is a little blown outta proportion.

Some bench players aren't too happy about there playing time. Cito has always been loyal to the veterans.

There were alot of things that were absolutely ridiculous that he did, that screwed this franchise.

At least we found a sucker to take one of them..... thanks Chisox for taking Rios.
