when i awoke today i had an extremely sharp pain in my calf

its like the muscle went into a sudden severe flex and i had no control what so ever. it lasted for about 5 mins or so and now it feels like i just did a huge set of calf raises

this had only happened twice now , i am taking 2 weeks off before i start a cut anyways i was just wondering if this happens to anyone else ?

usually when we sleep, our feet are in a plantar flexed position under the covers. This places the plantar flexors in a shortened position, making them prone to possible cramping.

Electrolyte imbalances can create calf cramping.

Trigger points can also create the problem.

Tough thing to speculate over the internet.

Make sure you're hydrated and getting enough potassium.

I've had recurring calf cramps for like a decade. They haven't happened recently since I make sure I stay hydrated and take a multi.

Once after a day of ham dominant work and football practice I got cramp in both hams and calves

I woke the whole house up with my screams of writhing agony.

My friend used to get cramps every saturday when we played soccer, and it got better as he ate like 3 bananas every morning before it and drank gatorade during half time because it replaces lost electrolytes.

What should you do in the case of cramps? Extend the muscle using it's agonist?

three things you can do manually:

a) try and stretch the muscle

b) contract the antagonist (usually while trying to stretch the cramping muscle)

c) apply pressure into the muscle in order to get it to relax

I use to get calve cramps and if I applied pressure on the foot by standing on the same leg immediately when the cramp starts it use to go away.

Try it, You can feel when the cramp is coming so immediately stand on the floor.

Always works for me.

It might be the potassium from the banana....just my guess.

hi i am new to this site, but wonder if you could advise. in nov 09 i damaged the meniscus in my left knee. i was due opp in dec 09 but due to snow over here it was cancled, so i am currently awaiting further appointment. in the meen time while out walking had a severe pain in my left calf, as i limp with this injury and walked on my toes for some time just wondering if this could be a cause of this pain.
look forward to your reply.
regards keith rennie

how long did the pain last? did your muscle feel fatigued after? and were you able to walk after?

I once had a severe calf cramp and someone advised me to sit down on the ground with my leg flat and extended. Then, he had my friend use his flat lower palm to hit my heel, which sent sort of a shockwave up the calf. The cramping immediately stopped and my calf was just tended for a few hours.
