Rich46yo welcome to IM!![]()
Hello to all. My name is Rich and, first off, I dont consider myself a serious body builder. Tho I have always admired the sport, and the competitors. I have lifted weights for many years however and have always considered them a critical part of a fitness regimen. I got hurt as a Policeman 13 years ago and have had 7 low back surgical procedures. Thru the years Ive had to restart my fitness regimen time and time again starting with a walk to the bathroom and slowly building up. I was told by countless doctors that I should absolutely quit weightlifting and I found out along the way that there are very few doctors who actually know anything about sports rehab.
Anyway I didnt listen to them. I didnt listen to them when they told me I'd end up in a wheelchair "10 years from now", which would have been 2001 .
Now Im 46 yo and feel great. Im back to a 4 day split and use a weight machine and free dumbells. Ive tailored my lifting with my back in mind and stretch, low back and stomach strengthening daily. Inlcludeing daily arobics, "eliptical trainer". Exercise, and most of all weights, have actually allowed me to return to full duty. Where I have found that even after all this Im in better shape then a lot of kids I have 20 to 25 years on.
If I have a message its that weight training is not only helpful in rehabing from back surgerys/problems its absolutely essential. If it wasnt for weights I'd probably be in that wheelchair right now.....................Rich

Welcome to IM Rich. I'm 48 years old and have had some low back problems as well. Nothing on a par with you though. Great comeback story!
