    42 yr old new guy

    Hello-

I am new to your board but been around a few gyms over the years. I was researching rotator cuff injury and stumbled upon your site, and foung it to be a great resource for information, motivation, and humor. I especially liked the 'Universal Gym Rules' thread and plan on compiling it and posting it at my current gym.

Anyway, i'm off training since april 24 as i have managed to tear my left rotator cuff severely. I had damaged it previously many years ago, and had just restarted my weight training in December '03. I have made some significant gains since then, and don't want to let this injury impede my progress. Has anyone worked back from a severe tear like this one? Any help would be appreciated.

Kwake welcome. I cant say Ive come back from a rotator but Ive come back from 7 serious lowback operations.

The only reason Im telling you this is for inspirational purposes. Not that its sounds like you need it. But a friend of mine is coming back from a rotator tear and having a lot of problems with it. He hasnt lifted for months and really down about it. I told him to have a surgical repair done. Hes worried about being off work but hes really in the dumps cause he cant lift.

Ive played football with guys that have damaged their rotators. From what I can remember their gameplan was a few months off, starting real light, and listening to their body when it was time to quit. Some guys could avoid surgery, others couldnt.

Anyway Im not a doctor. Im just a guy whos come back from horrendous injuries, and thru weighttraining have accomplished miracles. Be patient, whether you chose surgery or not your going to make it. I feel your dedication thru the script.

    Welcome and take care......................Rich

Thanks for the inspiration, Rich. I think I may be forced to have the surgery this time. I was kind of working around my previous rotator injury when this occurred. Guess I wasn't being quite careful enough. Anyway, my x-rays will be in tomorrow, and i'll take it from there. I did start with low weights in December, and have carefully increased since then. I think my main mistake was letting my form suffer in an effort to make some growth schedule that was only in my mind. Patience, patience, patience.

    Kwake welcome !

I didn't have a tear but I had a number 3 impingment in my right shoulder and it is as strong if not stronger than it was, Since starting to workout after my surgery I have lost 40 lbs of fat and beleive it or not am starting my first bulk.

My only advise, don't get in a hurry. It willl come back.
