Just as soon as I was getting serious about getting back into strength training (Dinosaur Training), I find out that I have 2 protruding Discs in my lower back. They're not really serious and they don't require surgery thank God.
Does this mean that Deadlifts and 20-rep Squats are over for me??! I hope not. What can I do?? Can anyone help??
In all honesty, you need to see a specialist or a physical therapist that can give you an evalutation and asses the situation for you and tell you what you are cable of doing and what you should stay away from. Just because the protruding disks do not need surgery right now does not mean that you have a green light to train like a maniac. Without actually seeing you I think anyone would be foolish to tell you that you should be doing anything in the gym. Go to a specialist, not just a Doctor and see what they say. Welcome to IM.
You're right P-Funk, thanks for the advice.
I'm probably going to see a chiropractor, too.
I feel that I may just stick to a program of Hindu Pushups, Hindu Squats, Pistol, Handstand Pushups, Weighted Dips, Pull ups, SEATED dumbell presses, Bench presses,
and Squats with a hip belt to avoid lower back pressure. And of course grip work.
How does that sound for a program, eh?
Iron while the advice to go a a doctor is sound in the end only you are going to be able to make up your mind as to what you can, and cant do. "Two protruding disc's" can mean about anything and you dont give any symptoms that you have, or are, experiencing. This is actually a fairly common condition and for every back made bad by exercise there are probably 10,000 ones that have gone to shit due to not exerciseing. This thread Weightlifting After Back Surgery spells out what Ive been thru and Im still pumping iro four times a week. I did however have to quit deadlifting and adjust my workout to my injuries.
A good chiropractor whos schooled in sports medicine can help you immensly. I'd be real wary of back surgeons. For every one who tells you you dont need surgery there are normaly three who'll tell you you do. European doctors, under socialized medicine, do 1/2 the back surgeries that American doctors do, who operate under "cash and carry". The 6 mo. patient satisfaction rate is exactly the same, maybe a little higher in Europe. American surgeons like to justify so many operations with such pithy statements like "I care so much about my patient I wanted to treat his injury aggresively". "Yeah............uh huh, sure Doc".
""""""
Can someone with 2 protruding discs in their lower back train in certain ways like deadlifting and doing 20 rep breathing squats??"""""""
Nobody here can answer this for you. Only you can, and maybe with the help of a specialists. I would warmup and stretch real well before doing any of these lifts tho and I wouldnt be surprised if you end up with no limitations. You are, however, going to have to lift smart for the rest of your life. Thats not bad advice for anyone tho........................welcome and take care............Rich
