Vista Halp!

Ok Vista has little quirks that I can't stand!!!

I tried really hard to like it, I just can't...

anyways every now and then programs just stop working, I get an error saying the program cant find MSVP71.DLL

it is always that file that is missing...For Realplayer this has happened, for Photoshop, and now most recently for my antivirus Avast....

so I just go and download it and put it in the folder for the program and it works...

until now that the Avast folder is marked 'read only' and when I change it, it just resets back to 'read only'

I am logged in as an administrator, I always am....I tried turning UAC off, still didnt work.....so I can not get MSVP71.DLL into the Avast folder where it needs to go....

second little annoyance, I like to sort my folders by "Date Modified" and it isnt in the list, so I just goto 'more' and choose it, but it doesnt ever save it that way, so I have to do it EVERY time I open a folder....VERY VERY VERY annoying!

I hope all this made sense....

Have you tried using the command line or is there a safe mode option so you can go in there and modify the read-only setting?

Have you tried going into Folder Options and setting the Remember Folder View Settings to on? Have you installed Service Pack 2?

Greeeeaaaaat

well I think I just turned a minor problem into a much bigger one...

I was suggested to uninstall service pack 1 and reinstall it

...well I think I uninstalled the right thing, but after that my computer wouldnt restart properly, couldnt restart in last known good config, safe mode...anything

I had to completely reinstall windows...I dont have a Windows disk, I have a recovery disk (fuck those) and I didnt see the repair option I was looking for that I read somewhere else I would find...

though the previous version I think is still on here I cant boot from it, and while I was reinstalling it said something about me being able to access 'windows old' or something like that...

all the files must still be on my hd because it shows the same amount of space being used up...

fuck I have no idea what I just did lol

my biggest concern right now is getting Photoshop CS2 up and working again, I had 2 licenses to use only, and the previous computer I had it installed on took a dump completely, the HD it was on went to shit, a paperweight, so I cant even boot up the computer to deactivate it from that comp, now I dont know how I am going to get it deactivated from the previous install of Windows so I can install it on this one

FUCK!

sounds like something is wrong with your registry. Being the genius that i am and make no mistake about it, i am a genius, I have to swallow my pride and go to a PC repair shop. Every new version of windows that comes out is worse than the previous version when things start to go wrong.

I'm about to mass produce these bumper sticker - "Back in '98 everything was straight" ; " Mac is whack" ; "Vista is for illegal immigrants" .

If it wasn't for mathematica I wouldn't need anything but linux

It seems like there is a fellow on here who is really good with PCs. jmmorrison, or jmorrison. something like that. You may be able to find vista somewhere online at a decent price. Best bet maybe to just completely format the drive and start over.

maybe call the Geek squad from best buy.

Thanks man

The computer is working fine, the problem right now is that I believe I wrote over my old version of Vista that had everything on it, I know that everything is still available because the space is still being used on my hard drive, and there is a folder called windows.old where I can find everything

but I would rather revert to what I had and deal with the little problems I was having, which turned into a bigger one after I uninstalled service pack 1 and couldnt reboot my computer...

normally I would just scrap the old one, but I need to be able to start up Photoshop CS2 somehow so I can deactivate it, so that I can install it on the current installment of the OS, also I want to get my bookmarks back for Firefox...

probably sounds a bit confusing the way I am explaining it, but it feels like I created a much bigger mess out of a small one that I initially had
