I think before that ever happens, there needs to be an effort to really educate people on the basics of nutrition.

I was pretty grossly overweight for a long time. My parents always emphasized exercise, but no one ever really explained the mechanics behind nutrition and how it all worked on a basic levels (macros, calories, etc..).

As stupid as it sounds, I didn't know even the most basic information about nutrition until I was around 19-20 (read: when I first started frequenting this site)

While I agree with danzik in that you cannot force someone to understand nutrition and general health, I think sometimes in extreme cases, extreme measures are warranted. The kid is 14 years old and frickin' 555 pounds! Eight years old and 200+ pounds?! The parents are not only messing up the kids physically, but also wrecking them emotionally and socially.

Of course, I am not saying a court should be able to say "your kid must lose weight or we'll take them away," and just leave it at that. The ideal situation would be to offer health education assistance to these families... someone to come in and give examples on what foods are healthy, examples of what consists of healthy meals, and cooking tips.

In extreme cases, maybe. I place a lot of blame on video games for the way I was. I have a highly addicting personality when it comes to stuff like that. Combine that with a lack of nutritional knowledge and access to crap food and soda and it's a recipe for obesity. You are correct though, it does damage you both emotionally and socially. I'm not sure what's worse though in that regard - video games absolutely wreaked havoc on my social life (the effects of which are still present).

All of that said, I think that forcibly separating you from your parents has the potential to cause more damage than that. I'm more in favor of nutritional education even if it's court mandated.

I love me some Xbox too, but i dont think my parents would allow me to sit on my ass drinking jolt and eating cheesy poofs. Then again, ive also seen a lot of people balloon as soon as their parents were gone, ie. college

I don't know about losing custody but it should definitely be considered child abuse and the parents should be held accountable for making a change. That girl that was on the Maury show a few years ago where they asked her "Can you speak French" And she's all laughy and gigly going "Freanch Freyes, an, Freanch Tewst" It was fucking sickening, and her mother should be shot. At what point does somebody think it's okay that their kid is a lazy fat fucking slob? Way to provide and equal opportunity.

These parents are usually fat pig slobs themselves or they are weak and think making their child not eat is being cruel somehow. I remember my friend Eric's parents were obese turds, they used to have their own Snack Stashes and the kids would get beatings if one Ho-Ho was missing. The daughters would end up gorging themselves on junk food they'd buy away from home and have to eat before they got home, so they ended up ballooning from it. My father used to regulate junk food for my bro and I, and at dinner I could have second helpings of anything as long as I took equal helpings of veggies with it..... He also had a rule that we had to spend as much time outside as we did playing video games, so if I spent the whole day Saturday playing video games I had to spend Sunday playing outside.....

"We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using Natures inexhaustible sources of energy — sun, wind and tide. ... I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that."

snip "...South Carolina mom Jerri Gray lost custody of her 14-year-old, 555-lb. son in May. She was arrested after missing a court date to examine whether she should retain custody after doctors had expressed concern about her son's weight to social services."

The woman missed a court date to examine if she should keep custody!! These people have WAY more problems than eating too much crap.

Exactly. These people shouldn't have been allowed to reproduce in the first place.

Tbh i don't think it help's that the people who should be helping to educating these kids are doing a crap job too. they are being failed at home as well as at school.

I took my kid's off school lunchs a while ago because i was fed up of my kids coming home from school complaining about the food.

about 3 weeks ago the school sent out a random newsletter trying to encourage parent's to go back to school dinner's.

I read the menu and was frankly horrified at what the school was proffessing to be the "new improved healthy lunch menu" frankly it sucked, my idea of healthy and the school's idea of healthy are WAY different.

The school menu was all starchy carbs and suger, yes it had the "token veg option" but it was overall really really poor.

No joke about the school lunches. Not only does my daughter hate them, but i dont feel they are good for her. Plus, the school tries to emphasize children making their own decisions in the lunch line. Lets see how many kids grab the milk and carrot sticks for a snack vs the chocolate milk and cookies.
Lastly, i dont feel opening a box and putting the contents it in the microwave or in a pot constitute COOKING.
