Its about time a Pig get's its own flu!

USDA confirms H1N1 in Minnesota pigs

By HENRY C. JACKSON (AP) – 3 hours ago

WASHINGTON — At least one pig from Minnesota has tested positive for the H1N1 virus, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Monday, the first case of a pig contracting the virus in the United States.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement that USDA officials have begun to reach out to U.S. trade partners and international organizations to emphasize that H1N1, also known as swine flu, cannot be contracted by eating pork products.

"We have fully engaged our trading partners to remind them ... that there is no scientific basis to restrict trade in pork and pork products," Vilsack said. "People cannot get this flu from eating pork or pork products. Pork is safe to eat."

Monday's news comes after the USDA announced on Friday that it would test samples from three pigs collected between Aug. 26 and Sept. 1 at the Minnesota State Fair. The samples — from a university research project — showed potential positive tests for H1N1.

USDA officials have said that the pigs did not show signs of sickness, and officials suggested they likely contracted the virus from some of the nearly 1.8 million people who visited the fair.

Officials also said the infection of a so-called show pig doesn't indicate an infection of commercial herds because show pigs are in separate segments of agriculture than the swine industry.

The industry expected that the H1N1 virus would eventually turn up in domestic swine and had enhanced biosecurity measures to protect their pigs from people, said David Preisler, executive director of the Minnesota Pork Board. Herd infections were also already reported in Canada, Australia, Argentina, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Norway. A hog vaccine for the virus is being developed but isn't yet available.

Dave Warner, a spokesman for the National Pork Producers Council, said industry groups would wait to gauge consumer responses, though he said industry officials are at least as concerned about U.S. trade partners reacting adversely to the news. Warner said he would not rule out an ad campaign or other steps to reassure consumers.

Preisler said industry groups have long encouraged pork producers and their employees to get vaccinated for seasonal flu so they don't pass it to their animals, and they're encouraging them to get the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.

Infected pigs can pass influenza viruses to other pigs in the same herd. When that happens, producers treat ill animals with aspirin to reduce fever but otherwise generally let the disease run its course through the herd, which Preisler said takes about a week.

After that, he said, they can be safely sent to slaughter or other farms.

Preisler and others in the industry have been stressing that the appearance of H1N1 in domestic swine poses no danger to the public.

"As long as consumers remember that, we're hopeful that it doesn't have a negative impact on the market," Preisler said.

Associated Press writers Steve Karnowski in Minneapolis and Michael Crumb in Des Moines, Iowa contributed to this report.

People need to just shut up about h1n1 already. It's ridiculously over publicized.

I hope I get swine flu

"I just deleted my mom's number from my cell phone. That's because she called me in a panic after seeing a special on CNN about swine flu asking me what she should do. How about getting a clue, mom? Idiot.

You're all idiots. If you've spent more than a few minutes worrying about swine flu, you are an idiot. That's because it only takes a few minutes to look up the symptoms, mortality rate, and treatment to realize that it's no different from the common flu (which kills way more people and by extension is way more awesome), and going back to whatever it is you were doing, which was probably turning off CNN and canceling your cable subscription. In fact, worrying at all makes you an idiot. Why worry? Cowards worry and there is a 100% overlap between people who worry and people who regularly make cowardly decisions. That's why natural disasters kick so much ass. You never really know when they're going to hit, so you might as well let go and stop being such a scared pussy all the time. You'll cross the bridge of death when you get to it. Time to start taking risks, asshole! Quit your job. Quit answering your boss' calls during your time off. Go do something with your life. Jesus!

Which leads me to why swine flu is stupid. If I were to worry about anything—and I don't—swine flu would be pretty near the bottom of the list. Here's a list of things that are a higher priority of things to worry about:

Dying alone.
Not getting recognized for your genius.
Settling for a shitty job.
Getting married.

Just to be clear, not getting married isn't a problem, getting married is. Most people, due to fears of dying alone, will marry some jackass because they think nothing better will come along. They're usually right. But even if you find someone who isn't a total cock, marrying them will ruin everything because marriage is a false institution, and a waste of time and money. Cancel that big wedding party and buy a house, dipshits! Nobody wants to go to wedding parties. Besides, big gatherings lend themselves to communicable diseases. Holy shit that was a sweet transition. For those of you still not convinced that swine flu is bullshit, here's a list of symptoms for swine flu versus the regular flu:

See no difference? That's because there is no difference. Quit closing schools down every time someone gets swine flu, morons!

The problem isn't swine flu, but people talking about it (this article withstanding, because I'm the exception to every rule, that rule withstanding). Remember SARS? More bullshit. Fewer than 800 people died from it world wide. Yet the news networks prattled on about it for months. Now the slow news cycle lends itself to talking about swine flu ad nauseum even though there's already a vaccine for it. Oh, didn't know there was a vaccine? Yeah there has been a vaccine for it in the works almost since the beginning, rendering this non-issue even more irrelevant.

I will never take the swine flu vaccine because I already have it; it's called my immune system, and it's badass. I have never gotten sick in my life. My immune system is so strong that I have to get AIDS just to be normal. Your best defense against getting swine flu is to be me. Your second best defense is to have me cough in your face.

In fact, I'm going to put my money where my mouth is:

Swine Flu Challenge:

I'm holding a contest because I want to get swine flu just to prove how stupid it is. If I get it (unlikely), I will document my recovery on Youtube for the entire duration. Expect a short video. Here's what I'm willing to do:

Contest Rules:

One lucky person will get the opportunity to fly me out to where you live* for one night**, and you get to sneeze in my face.
Winner must provide a proof of having swine flu (signed doctor blood test or something along those lines).
Winner must not have any other bullshit diseases. I don't want your herpes, even though I can't get them.
* First class accomodations only.
** Winner must pay for at least one night of hotel accomodations (5 star or higher) unless you are a hot chick and want me to crash at your place. I will sleep in your bed and you will sleep on the couch. Winner must also agree to let me try on all their clothes and eat their food.

This contest is real. Email me if you have swine flu and are willing to fly me out to sneeze in my face. Don't email me unless you're serious and unless you have the money to fly me out first class. I'm totally serious about getting swine flu, but I have other shit to do too, so your window of opportunity is limited. You must fly me out between September 7, 2009 and September 21, 2009 because I'll be on book tour before then. If you miss your window of opportunity, too bad. Plan better next time and don't get sick unless I hold a contest. Make it happen.

549,422 people want me to cough in their faces.

My neighbors son had it. He was really sick. Sick for 2 weeks but he had underlying conditions. Other kids in my area had it as well and it took about 4 or 5 days like a normal flu and they were fine. People are freaking out a bit too much, I agree.

I thought the story was funny because we hear about humans getting it everyday but not the pigs lol.

I've just been hoping I won't get it because I go back to Boston tomorrow night and I don't want to be sick for vacation.

for the record she's not talking about me. i could prob get swine flu and not have much more than a headache for an afternoon. if you're so scared of every little thing you use antibacterial everything you're way more likely to get sick and get sicker when you do catch something. relax people.

My wife wants to get the vaccine. I have never, nor will i ever get a flu shot. Ill run the risk of getting sick. If i do, ill deal with it. If i dont even better. If i get a flu shot, i would get sick. If they guess the wrong strain you get sick from the flu shot, then the real flu because they guessed wrong. Two for zero.

No thanks.

I am completely against the flu shots as well. Work offers them for free and my manager was trying to convince us all to get it. Me and one other person said not gonna happen. The other 14 of my group did. I got it once when I was in my 20's and was more sick that year than most.

Ditto have never got one and never will.

However my wife and kids get one every year. She was debating about the H1N1 shot. Being preggo makes her a higher risk apparently.

Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.
