Question Cell phone question

I have T-Mobile and I want to get an HTC G1 Unlocked phone so that I can use it with T-Mobile but I don't want to pay for the data service, the G1 has Wi-Fi so I will use that where available. My question is can I put my SIM card into the HTC G1 unlocked phone and use the voice service? The reason I ask is T-Mobile requires the data plan with this phone, but I assume it does not matter if you use one that is unlocked, is this correct?

I thought you had an Iphone?

Short answer is yes.

Long answer is yes, but be extremely careful. The G1 requires a data plan because it is HIGHLY data dependent and may use data even when you think it isn't - this can rack up absurd overage charges anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

really? so maybe I am just better of paying the $24/month for their data plan?

I would. You might find it useful anyway.

The thousands of dollars is the extreme case where you're watching streaming youtube or pandora without a data plan.

More commonly it's 50-100$ for "normal" usage. I deal with this mobile junk a lot as part of my job so it's definitely not unheard of. I'd be especially wary on a device that's heavily cloud/internet based (read: Android).

Yea Prince it will work, at least short term it does. I have Tmobile as well and pulled my sim to test out a G2 and I was able to use all features.

Like danzik said becareful because the G1 is capable of running multiple apps in the back round. If you forget to close them (which people do, trust me) and go out of wifi range you're screwed!

Out of curiosity why the G1 and not the G2? I assume you got a good deal on the G1? The G2's form factor is much improved.

If you get the chance play with the G2. It's a much better phone. Personally I would get the data plan as well but I am constantly using tons of apps out of wifi.

The IPhone should be available to other cellphone providers soon.

Yes.... Why have a phone like that if you can't utilize it to the max.... I have an Evernote account and keep my poetry and other writings synced on my Iphone, Netbook, work and home PC's. If I'm stuck someplace waiting I can pull up the latest work I did at home and start adding to it and then save it and pull up the revised copy back at home....

don't you work in IT? I know when I used to do IT work my old SmartPhone was invaluable....

because where I moved to the coverage sucks, so I wanted a wi-fi phone so I could connect to my wireless when I am home, I quit IT (my day job) at the beginning of this year and I am running IronMagLabs and IronMagazine full time now.

Pay for the data back. It comes in handy. You will find it a wise investment in time.

I went from Verizon to AT&T, and lost more call the first week than the previous 4 years with Verizon.

But, I have an iphone. I've come to realize, the iphones greatest weekness is as a phone. It's great for most everything else.

Anyway, a sophisticated phone needs a data plan. Shell out.
