I would prefer one for a private local home network....preferably free.

AIM would work fine, the main benefit being that it's not limited to your local network.

They have this new system out that is tethered with twine and soup cans at the end. You have to pull really really tight so make sure there are no obstacles in the network. You might have to setup an VPN.

Try running your own XMPP server. Wikipedia it for more info - Openfire is an XMPP server licensed under the GPL.
