Hey, hyperactive kids, in California you can get stoned -- legally. California doctors are now recommending marijuana to children diagnosed with attention hyperactivity disorder, Sphere reports.
Since 2004, California has given out more than 36,000 medical marijuana cards. The number of these cards going to children - it appears that all of the known cases are teenagers - is not known, as doctors are not required to report medical marijuana cases.
However, experts say medical marijuana cards going to minors are on the rise. Parents must accompany children under 18 requesting medical marijuana to this doctor's appointment, the New York Times reports.
Even with this precaution, the fact that children can get medical marijuana is creating quite a controversy.
"Let me count the ways in which prescribing marijuana for teens with ADHD is a bad idea," Stephen Hinshaw, professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, told Sphere.
"The active ingredient in pot, THC, causes short-term memory problems and inattention, the very same things you want a medicine for ADHD to help alleviate," Hinshaw said.
Others have fewer qualms about giving a kid with ADHD some pot.
"I'd have no hesitation giving a youngster with ADHD a trial of oral marijuana," Lester Grinspoon, emeritus professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and author of "Marijuana: The Forbidden Medicine," told Sphere.
"For some kids, it appears to be more effective than traditional treatments. And marijuana certainly has fewer potential dangers than Ritalin."
"My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6," a Grass Valley, Calif., woman who wished to remain anonymous told Sphere. "He was hyperactive and had trouble in school, but we didn't want to put him on Ritalin. Too many side effects. When he got to high school, I suddenly noticed that he'd calmed and could concentrate. I couldn't figure it out. Then he told me that he'd started smoking pot."

These kids nowadays don't know how lucky they are, when I was a kid I had to walk across town with no shoes in the snowy winter to get my dope.

I am glad they are finding out that this once "Evil Drug" actually has some value, I just hope that these doctors can know the difference between a true ADHD kid and a kid with a high energy level.....there are parents out there who think just cause little Johnny is bouncing off the walls and goofing off in school he must be ADHD, when really he's just an undisciplined little snot.....
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

Weed may have allowed me to concentrate better, but the problem was I never got to choose what I would have to concentrate on.

This is the main reason I would have thoughts such as:
"I wonder if God could make a bong so big, that even he could not clear it?"

"You must learn to focus the force Luke".....as said by Jesus in some rare chapter of the Bible I think....

can't say I support this....when prescribing any drug to a minor serious discretion needs to be used

This is true but we can't allow the wicked few to cause more suffering.... There could be some child out there for whom this is the only option, maybe ritalin makes the problem worse, but a little THC sets his mind just right....hopefully we find a way to harness the chemical so that the children could ingest it and gain it's benefits for a longer time while also alleviating the potential for parents or older siblings to steal it......
