Is PPTP or IPSEC allowed through the Great Firewall? Or does it block via IP/hostname?

You could always purchase a VPN circuit from someone in the Netherlands or UK to bypass the Firewall (they can't block what they can't decrypt).

Using a VPN to tunnel out of a secure network can get you fired. My company just caught a guy in my department doing that so he could VPN back to his computer at home to check email. They gave him one warning and said if it happens again, he is fired.

Set up an SSL VPN via HTTPS

They do have a legitimate concern though since it does create a routable endpoint - basically an unsecured entry into their own network.

I don't see why they would take issue with using something like SSH and X Windows though, unless it's more of a personal stuff at work issue rather than security.

They would take issue because establishing a VPN out to a site could allow for nasty viruses and worms to get to the internal network. You would have a nice little encrypted virus coming through the ssh tunnel until the data is decrypted on your work pc, and bam!

I see your point, and I'm not trying to start an argument. I'm just saying that companies really don't like for their network administrator to come to them saying the an employee is circumventing their network security.

These days, nearly everyone has a smartphone. My laptop is in my office, and it is tethered to my blackberry. It makes life easier.

A mate of mine has some software he's gonna give me to get around this. This is govt sensorship over here. Even proxies won't get around it.

It's ridiculous. I can access any foreign media I want, but they block youtube and all social networking sites, except for domestic Chinese ones. I'm thinking the reasoning is probably more commercial than political nowadays. As soon as these new sites starting gaining a foothold in the market here, suddenly the foreign ones were zapped.
