Ten years ago, I thought I knew allot about fitness and weight training.
I read tons of material. Practiced all of the most popular theories.
Went on to pass all the info I knew to everyone who asked. Little did I know I knew nothing about it at all!
I joined here a month ago, confident about my experience and knowledge in the world of fitness only to realize, I'm just a newbie again, learning it all over. Hopefully, this time, I will actually learn something.
Here's a small list of misconceptions I've come across in my short time here. Please feel free to add to this list. I think having it all in one place will benefit those looking for answers to the most common misinformation in the world of weight training and fitness.
1. Egg yolks are bad for your cholesterol.
Truth- There's no evidence that shows yolks raise bad cholesterol levels.
2. Training to failure on every set is mandatory.
Truth- Constantly taking sets to failure is too taxing on the CNS.
3. Cardio directly burns fat.
Truth- Cardio actually raises the metabolism. High metabolism burns fat
4. You must eat every 3 hours to avoid entering a catabolic state.
Truth- Your body will not break down muscle if you are training regularly.
5. keep your training consistant indefinitly to see results.
Truth- stagnant training will lead to adaptation and ceases gains.
6. Eating fat will make you fat.
Truth- Fat is essential. Eating excess calories is what leads to fat gains.
7. Eat big to be big.
Truth- while true for youth, those over 30 make gains more with hard work, not excessive calorie surpluses.
8. Crunches lead to 6 pack abs.
Truth- Abs are derived from diet.
9. Squats are a leg exercise.
Truth- Squats benefit the entire body.
10. Suppliments are nessesary to make muscle gains.
Truth- Suppliments are not going to make up for poor nutrition.
These are just a few things I've learned here in just the shortest amount of time. In a month you guys fixed 10 years of misinformation for me.
I look forward to what I will learn in February! Thanks to all of the IM community for helping me get on track, I expect great things from you in the future!
Cheers!
