It's 1-2$ to leave your computer in sleep mode all month. Hardly something to worry about.

I need me an SSD though, then I don't even need to sleep my computer - hello 15 second boot time!

You guys better get your ssd's now, speculation is that the already hard to get flash chips for the drives due to iphone/ipods will get even worse with the ipad causing a greater shortage thus driving the cost up...

Sure, I could do it on my phone, but once you've used the device, it's hard to deny it's appeal. I don't have to start my computer up, wait for it to boot, login, waiting for my startup apps to load, etc. I just reach over, push the home button & I'm on. The keyboard is really usable in landscape ( I mean't to say I CAN type pretty fast on it in my last post).

It's definitely a convenience, it's nothing I needed. That said, I could see myself now leaving my laptop at home when I go on trips & just bring thing this.

The gaming aspect is ok, but I personally think touch screen games for the most part don't work. There are exceptions, but then again I'm not much of a portable gamer anyway.

The publisher support is great. Everyone is developing apps for this, just as they did for the iphone. During football season, it's going to be great to have the iPad in my lap watching games seeing all the stats. The MLB at bat app looks awesome, too. And this is just the beginning.. devs have only had the sdk for a couple months.

Also, I've wanted an ebook reader for a while, and I really like the iPad's... not that it does anything the kindle couldn't, but being that this is so much more than an ebook reader, it wasn't really a tough decision.

BTW.. I know how much you love Karl Rove, so thought I'd tell you.. his book was the first one I bought on it.. loving it so far!

I'm not married to it, so if Google comes out with a better tablet & it's worth moving, I'd switch... apple products usually don't drop too much in value & I could recoup most of my investment. I love the form factor, and for now the ipad is great.

Right now I have my netbook on my little lapdesk, it has a tiny screen and I'm always dropping the mouse, having just a screen to carry around that I use my finger to navigate on appeals to me. I can read, write and everything, plus not have to remember my mouse slid off and is jammed between the couch cushion or one of my dogs grabbed it. If they have an app for it I might hook my netbook to my 55" tv and use my ipads Air Mpuse app. I tried it with my iphone but typing was for shit...

The most appealing thing is having a laptop like device just like my iphone. If I need to do things my ipad can't do I have my desktop in the study and a full sized laptop. The ipad will be my quick reference, read some eboks, type up a poem, email or work on my novels tool, I can keep it by the bed, coffee table and easily carry it everywhere without needing to have the mouse handy too....

I went to the Apple store today to consult Genius Bar regarding my iPhone, with no interest or intention of buying an iPad. I have a Mac Air which, I believed, can do everything and more an iPad can do. But once the nice lady demonstrated, I must tell you that it is hugely impressive. It's like holding the Internet in your hand, everything beautifully laid out and intuitive beyond anything Apple has done, and they essentially invented the concept if not the word. What I really didn't expect was a Word compatible text application (Pages) with a keyboard on the screen that was as big and easy to use as the keyboard on which I am now typing. I am buying one, but will wait for the G3 edition to come out in a few weeks. Seeing it on a screen is a very different experience than holding it in your hands and using it. The only off-puting thing was all the game applications that may or may not be pre-loaded. T

    I have a desktop, a laptop and my droid phone... I don't need a 4th device.

Especially one that can't even do Flash or multiprocess.

Well, the only person I know who's having it this early is the daughter of John Chow... ( if you're a blogger, then you probably know him. )
For me, I won't definitely have it this year or the coming years... I'm not a techy person and sad to say, I dont have the money to buy it.

The iPad isn't amazing until you hold it in your hands, then it's damn amazing. I'd decided to buy the G3 after an earlier visit to the Apple store, but have followed these posts and, more or less, some of you are right: It's more plaything than computer; my Mac Air can do everything and more. So when I returned to the Apple store yesterday, I did the wise thing: bought the 27" HD iMac instead of the iPad, and the resolution/picture is incredible. My guess is -- and only a guess -- there are some porn fans here who would love it. Listening Saney, LW?
