    Computer problem please help!

I'm having computer problems (Im on another one right now) and it is kind of urgent that I figure something out...

My pc was working perfectly fine but was slow so I decided to open it up to see what kind of ram I had so I could buy more....didn't touch anything but the ram and I know my way around a pc pretty well so I know I didnt mess anything up there....anyways I put the case back together and try to start it and get nothing...

now normally I would think it is the power supply but nothing happened to make me think it went out all of a sudden, as far as a pop start where a spark flew or anything like that....I get dead air when I hit the power button, nothing. when I plug the power cord in I can see a light pop on looks like near a battery on the motherboard (have a window in my case) so some kind of power must be hitting it...? But the light is yellow/orange, don't know what it signifies...

I checked all the connections coming off of the power supply and they all seem to be plugged in, the start button does too....I'm at a complete lost and very nervous that something got ruined by me just opening the case and checking what ram I have!

Hey bro, I would be willing to bet that you either:

    1. Need to reseat the ram. If ANYTHING is in that slot it will mess up and you will have POST issues. Remember that if you have more than 1 stick of memory, start by replacing them one at a time and see if you POST after each stick. Memory sticks CAN be damaged fairly easily and you may have just one bad stick. Your system should POST just fine with only one in it.

    2. Possibly messed the RAM up. Try the sticks in a known good system and see if you POST. Take RAM out of a known good system and try it in the other machine.

If you didnt touch anything, and there was no static discharge, it is probably one of the above. Its fairly difficult to fry a motherboard. Try swapping the sticks too.

    Good luck.

The light not being green implies something is wrong, see above for re-seating RAM. If that is what you touched, thats probably what you goofed. You may even have to pull them out and run one at a time to see if one is now bad.

I have two sticks of ram and tried starting with the other stick with no luck, and tried it in the slot that I took this one out of and still no luck...thing is that one could be bad too because my computer started getting way slower than usual which led me to believe one of the sticks went bad...

but ram can make a computer get no power at all? the fans wont start when the press the power button or anything....no "turn over"

but again the fact that I'm getting a light on my motherboard when I plug the power cord into the power supply leads me to believe some power has to be getting to it...It is very strange...

thanks for all the help too btw guys, appreciate it

have you tried re-seating everything on the motherboard? if not try that, if you still have no success try replacing the power supply, you should be able to get a new one for around $40.

Unplug the main power line to the mobo, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in.

Yes, if something is wrong one of those lights will not green up and the computer will not boot. If it does start to boot and give beep codes, then there is still a problem. If it wont start at all its usually a very low level problem, i.e. RAM.

One stick is probably now dead, or inserted incorrectly.

Sometimes power supplies lose a rail or don't put out enough juice, ATX PSU should run about 35 bucks if you don't have a hot computer.

Been there, done that. This is what I thought might have happened, but he said he didn't touch anything.

I am still standing by the idea of it being RAM. If it was turning on before you took out the ram, and will not turn on now that you have fiddled with it, chances are unless you had some sort of massive static discharge, you just have the RAM inserted incorrectly, or your sticks went bad. If you know anyone who has any known good memory that will run in your system, try it out.

It is just so hard to fry a system anymore, and a power supply wont usually just blink out like that.

And yes, depending on the MB a computer will simply not fire up, or shut down immediately if the RAM is in wrong or bad. I understand that you have 2 sticks, but how many slots do you have to put the sticks in? It could be a bad slot, it could be DIMM rails, in which case while running only 1 stick you may have to have it in a certain slot. I would try one stick in each slot, then try the other stick in each slot and see what happens.

Good luck bro, I know it's frustrating, but problems like this are 90% of the time caused by some piddly-ass issue, and it's most likely nothing major.

The good news is, if it IS your MB, you can find a replacement well short of 100 bucks, same with a PSU.

Did you put the RAM in the exact same slots? If they aren't in the correct sequence POST won't find them. The slots are usually labeled 1,2,3,4 etc. My bet is you put them in 3 and 4 or something and nothing is in 1.
