    Andy Whitfield passes

'Spartacus' star Whitfield dies of lymphoma at 39 | Comcast.net

LOS ANGELES — Andy Whitfield, who played the title role in the hit cable series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has died at age 39, according to representatives and family.
Whitfield died Sunday in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, manager Sam Maydew told the Associated Press.
"On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer," Whitfield's wife Vashti said in a statement. "He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was."
Andy Whitfield — who was born in Wales and moved to Australia in 1999 — was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the legendary Thracian slave in "Spartacus," a role made famous by Kirk Douglas in the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film.
The series proved a breakout hit for the Starz network and made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality.
Whitfield appeared in all 13 episodes of the first season that aired in 2010, and was preparing to shoot the second when he was diagnosed with cancer.
While waiting for Whitfield's treatment and expected recovery, the network produced a six-part prequel, "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," that aired earlier this year with only a brief voiceover from the actor.
But in January after Whitfield's condition grew worse, the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the role.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield," Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement Sunday night. "We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in `Spartacus' and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life."
Whitfield's previous credits included appearances on the Australian TV shows "Packed to the Rafters" and "McLeod's Daughters."

I saw that, this morning. Its pretty sad, seemed like a humble guy, he never really got that big break until Spartacus, only to get cancer, and a 18 months later die.

    Sad

‘Spartacus’ Marathon Will Honor Late Actor

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) -The Starz network has scheduled a special marathon of “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” to honor the series’ breakout star, 39-year-old Andy Whitfield, who died on September 11 after a battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Five episodes, including the first episode and the first season finale, will air at 9 p.m. on October 2. The entire first season will air on December 16.
Whitfield, who was cast as the titular warrior after a lengthy talent search by producers, starred in the entire first season and was preparing to film season two when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2010.
The network postponed production and planned to resume the series once Whitfield recovered, and he was believed to be in remission in June, but the disease returned, and by September, he was forced to drop out of the project.
Australian actor Liam McIntyre has been cast as the new Spartacus, and the series, now titled “Spartacus: Vengeance,” is scheduled to premiere on Starz in January.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Gladiator groupies can brace themselves for more gore in the arena.
Starz has given its series “Spartacus” a go-ahead for a third season, the pay cable network announced on Monday.
The green light comes months ahead of the January 27, 2012, premiere of “Spartacus: Vengeance,” the second season of the “Spartacus” saga.
The as-yet-untitled third season is expected to begin production in New Zealand in early 2012. “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” which aired in January 2011, drew an estimated 6.2 million total viewers per episode when all linear channels and on-demand viewing are factored in.
“Spartacus: Vengeance” stars Australian actor Liam McIntyre in the title role, replacing deceased star Andy Whitfield. Executive producer Rob Tapert promises that it will offer “many surprises” for fans.
